The 2009 Wrangler Junior High Finals Rodeo (WJHFR) is officially off and running in Gallup, New Mexico. This year's event features a total of 816 contestants from the United States, Canada and Australia. This is the fifth Finals for the National High School Rodeo Association's (NHSRA) Wrangler Division and the fifth appearance of the event at Red Rock Park in Gallup.
Designed to mirror the NHSRA's successful structure, the Wrangler Division was created in 2004 to introduce a new generation of students to the sport of rodeo and to act as a feeder system for the high school ranks of the NHSRA. Today, a total of 41 states, five Canadian provinces, and Australia belong to the Wrangler Division. Wrangler Division events include Barrel Racing, Pole Bending, Goat Tying, Breakaway Roping, Tie- Down Roping, Chute Dogging, Team Roping, Ribbon Roping, and Junior Bull Riding. Competitors in the WJHFR qualified in each event by finishing in the top-four at their state/provincial finals rodeo.
Action for this year's WJHFR kicked-off on Sunday evening, June 28th and continues throughout the week with two performances each day. The championship round is slated for Saturday, July 4th at 7:00 PM.
For more information on the WJHFR and the National High School Rodeo Association, contact NHSRA Media Director, Mike Hausmann, via email at mike@nhsra.org
The National High School Rodeo Association is one of the fastest growing youth organizations in the nation, with an annual membership of over 10,500 students from 41 states, five Canadian provinces and Australia. The Association sanctions over 1,100 rodeos each year. The NHSRA is governed by a national board of directors, which consists of one member from each state or province. A staff at the national headquarters in Denver, Colorado, handles the day- to- day operations. For more information on the NHSRA, visit the association's official website located at www.nhsra.org.
