CASPER, Wyo.--- Chuck Schmidt from Black Hills State University put himself in the running to win back-to-back saddle bronc riding titles at the College National Finals Rodeo.
The Keldron, S.D., native rode the horse named Kickin’ Country from the Mosbrucker Rodeo Company for 76 points on Friday night. Combined with previous two scores, he has a total of 218.5 points. That puts him in fifth place coming into Saturday night’s finals.
Wyatt Smith, from the University of Montana – Western took command of the steer wrestling. He had a 5.2 second run on Friday night and while that isn’t fast enough to place in the round, it put him atop the leader board with a total of 14.0 seconds. Jake Mitchell from West Texas A&M University is in second with 14.0.
There are now two bull riders who have covered all three of their preliminary bulls. Tagg Elliott from the College of Southern Idaho had a 53 on Friday with the option of a re-ride when his bull did not perform as expected. He had ridden his first two and opted to keep his score. This gave him a total of 208 points and put him in second place. Chad German from Hill College is ahead of Elliott by 10 points.
The final performance of the rodeo will feature the top 12 contestants in each event. The National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association champions will be determined by their fastest total times or highest total scores. Action starts at 7 p.m. in the Casper Events Center.
