CASPER, Wyo.--- Nikke Steffes from the University of Wyoming is showing the Cowboy State what a cowgirl can do.
Steffes won the all-around title at the Casper Events Center in 2007. This year she qualified in barrel racing, goat tying and breakaway roping. She sits at the top of the leader board in goat tying, is sixth in the breakaway roping and even though she won't be among the top twelve in the barrel racing has earned her team 50 valuable points.
Steffes is leading the all-around standings and looking for a second title and as a result of her performance, the UW women are also leading the team standings. Steffes was recognized for her actions outside of the rodeo arena on Tuesday when she received a $2,500 scholarship and trophy buckle for the Walt Garrison Top Hand Award.
In spite of giving their best efforts here, the bull riders are still hitting the dirt more often than not. Chad German from Hill College is the only contestant that has been successful on all three bulls. Tag Elliott is the only contestant that has the opportunity to overtake German. Elliott will compete here Friday night and has ridden two bulls for 155 points. All the College of Southern Idaho athlete needs to do is ride his bull for 64 points to move to the top of the standings. Regardless, he is assured a spot among the top 12 based on his previous two rides.
The fourth performance of the rodeo gets underway at the Casper Events Center on Friday at 7 p.m.
