Brothers Win Team Roping Round at CNFR - Finals

CASPER, Wyo. --- Brothers from Zachary, La., won the first round of team roping at the 61st annual College National Finals Rodeo (CNFR) here on Monday.

Jesy and Rudy Austin stopped the clock in 6.2 seconds for the win. They are both attending Wharton County Community College in Wharton, Texas. Jesy, the younger of the duo did the heading. He is 19 years old and competing at his first CNFR. Rudy has been here the past two years. He is 22 years old and was responsible for catching the steer’s two hind feet.

In the tie-down roping it was P.J. Painter, from Buffalo, S.D., who had the fastest time. Painter’s 10.4 second run not only gave him the first round win, he earned a valuable 80 points for Black Hills State University’s mens team.

Former women’s all-around champion Nikki Steffes won the first round of goat tying. Steffes is a senior at the University of Wyoming in Laramie and had a time of 6.3 seconds. She makes her home in Vale, S.D. Steffes won the all-around title here in 2007.

Jake Shaw from Missouri (Marshall) Valley College has the fast time in steer wrestling. His 3.8 earned him the first place check in the round. Shaw’s most loyal supporter, his grandfather, made the trip from Cocoa, Fla., to cheer him on.

In barrel racing it was Rachel Tiedeman, from South Dakota State University at the top of the leader board. She and her horse completed the pattern in 14.27 seconds. All of these contestants will have their second round of competition here on Tuesday. The first performance of the rodeo starts Tuesday night at 7 p.m.
