CASPER, Wyo.---The first performance of the 61st annual College National Finals Rodeo got underway at the Casper Events Center on Tuesday.
After three days of pre-rodeo competition, the third round is underway in all events. Rodeo contestants are now waiting to see how the third round unfolds in hopes of qualifying for next Saturday night’s final round. Dusty Gracia from Southwestern Oklahoma State University saw his hopes of a national bareback riding championship come closer to fruition with a 71.5 point ride Tuesday night.
This is currently in second place in the third round and unlikely to get him a pay check. However, Gracia was successful enough on his first two rides that he has a commanding lead in the over-all standings. His total of 227 points is 15 points ahead of the man in second place, Denver DeRose from Dawson Community College.
Bryan Martinat from Western Texas College had an 80-point effort in saddle bronc riding to take the lead in the third round and over-all standings. Martinat is looking good for a national championship with a total of 231.5 points.
The third round of competition continues here thru Friday night. At the conclusion of that performance the top 12 contestants in each event will advance to Saturday’s finals.
The second performance of the CNFR begins at 7 p.m. on Wednesday night.
