PUYALLUP, Wash. – Steer wrestler Stockton Graves has had the bulk of his best results in Wrangler ProRodeo Tour events this year and he again showed he likes the big stage Saturday night when he won the second round with a rodeo-best time of 3.5 seconds at the Ariat Playoffs.

Graves, of Newkirk, Okla., knew he needed to come up with something special to keep his title hopes alive here at the Western Washington Fairgrounds, but even he was surprised by the time he managed on three-time horse of the year Zan.

“I got a good start and knew it was going to be fast but never thought it would be that fast,” Graves said. “Everything just worked for me. It was a good move for me to get on Zan (starting in July). It is nice to have a horse like that as he gives you a lot of confidence. I have been drawing well lately and I hope to keep it going.”

The lightning-fast run got him into the semifinals with a time of 8.6 seconds on two head, part of a field that includes Billy Bugenig, Josh Peek and Wade Sumpter. The $3,099 check he got for winning the round brought his earnings in Wrangler ProRodeo Tour events to $33,799, more than two-thirds of his total.

The top eight in the average in each event will compete on Sunday afternoon. All scores and times will be erased and everyone will start with a clean slate. The top four times and scores will advance to the final round and the top time and score in the final round will be crowned the champion of the Ariat Playoffs for the Puyallup Round.

Bareback rider Tom McFarland, of Wickenburg, Ariz., who won the Caldwell, Idaho round of the Ariat Playoffs, gave himself a shot at repeating here when he led all competitors Saturday and got through the preliminaries second behind Justin McDaniel with 170 points on two head.

McFarland rode Calgary Stampede’s Hurricane Terry for 86 points to finish in a tie with McDaniel of Porum, Okla., for the first round title and then came back in the evening to earn an 84 point score.

“I have been drawing really well the last few weeks,” said McFarland of his recent winning streak. “I had never had that horse before (Hurricane Terry) but I was happy to have it as that was the one to have today. I hope I can just keep picking up checks.”

Barry Burk and Blair Burk finished the first two rounds of the tie-down roping competition 1-2 with Barry holding just a one-tenth-of-a-second edge, with a time of 16.3 seconds on two head. World All-Around champion Trevor Brazile was third in 16.7 seconds.

Biggest money winner of the first two days of the Puyallup Pro Rodeo was barrel racer Sherrylynn Johnson who won both rounds and the average title for $9,297, despite suffering with kidney stones.

Fox Sports Net will broadcast four separate one-hour shows from Puyallup, beginning the week of Sept. 22. Visit the Tour page on prorodeo.com for more information.
