MARCH 18, 2007 — HOUSTON — FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE — The winners of the Super Series Championship were named during the March 18, performance of RodeoHouston, each walking away with $50,000.
Reliant Stadium was alive with energy as more than 70,000 fans packed the arena to watch the Super Series Championship. RodeoHouston fans exploded in cheers and applause as Texas cowboy Houston Hutto won the Tie Down Roping event by posting a time of 8.2 seconds. The $50,000 won’t affect the rest of Hutto’s rodeo season, saying, “I’ll just keep doing it while I’m young.”
Bobby Mote won the Bareback Riding with a score of 88.5. “It seemed like the whistle blew and it was just dead silence,” he said. “I couldn’t wait to get up and see what the crowd saw. It was hard not to jump out of my skin!”
Mote said his win at RodeoHouston will give him more momentum as he continues to compete to earn his spot in the National Finals Rodeo.
Father and son team Mike and Brandon Beers dominated the Super Series Championship Team Roping, catching their steer in 5.6 seconds. “It’s an awesome feeling when the crowd is cheering you on,” said Mike Beers, a World Champion team roper. “It’s such a great crowd because of the numbers.”
Utah cowboy Rusty Allen won the Saddle Bronc contest by scoring an 86. “You grow up dreaming of doing this,” Allen said. “When it finally happens, it is just surreal.”
Professional rodeo newcomer Jule Hazen of Protection, Kans., won the Steer Wrestling by pinning his steer in 3.6 seconds — the fastest time in the 2007 RodeoHouston. “I was holding my breath the whole time. I thought I was going to implode instead of explode,” Hazen said about his win.
Codi Baucom won the Barrel Racing event with a time of 15.53 seconds. When asked if she would be returning to RodeoHouston next year, Baucom said, “Heck yes! My success rate so far is really good!”
B.J. Schumacher scored 89.5 points in the Super Series Championship, enough to win the Bull Riding event and $50,000. “I was still pretty nervous,” Schumacher said about his score, “because I didn’t know what Mike (Moore) was going to do.”
He said that he now has two choices for the rest of his rodeo season: “One, I could try to go out and blow them all away, or two, I could ease off and spend more time traveling with my girlfriend,” Schumacher said. “I have rodeoed hard for six years now, and I could take a break.”
Winners of the Super Series Championship were awarded $50,000, and a RodeoHouston champion saddle and belt buckle.
Tonight’s RodeoHouston will feature 40 top bull riders in the Xtreme Bulls event and a performance by ZZ Top.
