Buller bests all at Rapid City

Rapid City, S.D.; Feb. 6, 2010 --- Until the final day of action, no bull rider had broken the 80-point mark at the Black Hills Stock Show Rodeo in Rapid City, S.D.

But some explosive combinations in rodeo’s final event changed the leaderboard three times. The final man to ride, Cody Buller of Glendive, Mont., came out with the 88-point win aboard Burns Rodeo’s Kid Twist to win $4,532.

Earlier, last fall, the bull out of Wyoming had carried Kanin Asay to a 91-point ride in Ellensburg, Wash. As for Buller, 29, he kicked off a career year with the win at Rapid City, which was the first event of the
PRCA’s Silver Million-Dollar Tour.

Asay garnered reserve honors with 85 points on Sutton Rodeo’s Black Powder – his third ride of the day (he’d been offered rerides on two previous bulls). And just behind the two veterans was bull riding’s newest star, 20-year-old rookie Dylan Werner, who spurred his way to 84 points on Dakota Rodeo Company’s Cool Cat.

Bareback rider Matt Lait, of Balzac, Alberta, pumped out an aggressive 85-point ride Saturday night on Sutton Rodeo’s Justin’s Angel, but it wasn’t enough to overtake Kaycee Feild, who clinched the bareback riding championship and $5,643 in Rapid City based on his 87-point ride on Southwick Rodeo’s Hard Times the first night of the rodeo.

Feild’s performance held through the weekend to give him plenty of confidence heading into Sunday’s short round at the Fort Worth (Texas) Stock Show Rodeo, where he was also leading the pack in the average. Shane Hanchey, currently leading the PRCA world tie-down roping standings, maintained his first-round lead in Rapid City. But on Saturday night, South Dakota native Trevor Thiel wowed tie down roping fans by winning the second round with a time of 8.0 seconds.

Josh Peek, of Pueblo, Colo., held on to win the average championship, having roped and tied two calves in 18.3 seconds in slack earlier in the week to earn $4,271.

In saddle bronc riding, defending world champion Jesse Kruse squeezed 80points out of Sutton Rodeo’s Tinker Bell in the matinee performance, but he couldn’t quite edge rodeo champions Cody Taton of Corona, N.M., and Cody Martin of Eagle, Colo., who’d scored 81 points apiece earlier in the week on Burch Rodeo Company’s Sand To Stone and Sutton Rodeo’s Ruby, respectively. They earned $4,078 apiece.

Reigning Badlands Circuit champion steer wrestler Clay Schaak of Wall, S.D., turfed his steer in 3.5 seconds Saturday night to split the second-round win and finish in a tie for third in the average. Nick Guy of Sparta, Wis., dominated the event with a two-head time of 7.4 seconds, worth a total of $4,734.

In a special ceremony in the arena, Guy was awarded the Levi Wisnes Memorial Award, given annually to the two-head average winner of the steer wrestling at the Black Hills Stock Show Rodeo, a rodeo that Wisness won twice before cancer took his young life in 2008. Clay Cowan presented the award, which was accepted by Tyler Haugen for Guy.

Team ropers on Saturday were able to move into sixth-place slots in both rounds, but couldn’t come near the two-head time turned in by former world champion Clay Tryan of Billings, Mont., and his partner, Travis Graves, of Jay, Okla. The two won the team roping championship in 10.3 seconds to
earn $4,929 each.

Tammy Whyte of Eau Claire, Wis., also held her lead in both rounds and the average throughout the week to sweep the barrel racing championship with two runs totaling 24.76 seconds for $4,971. Just behind her was 67-year-old June Holeman of Arcadia, Neb., with a 25.23.

Splitting the $1,000 cash bonus in the costumed Wild Ride were Ty Manke, in a blow-up doll costume complete with yellow tutu and Chase Kukuchka, dressed as a mountain man. A close third was Chancey Miller, who scored 79 points dressed as Pocahontas, fanning his bronc with a toy tomahawk.

In the freestyle bullfight, which also paid a $1,000 bonus, Andrew Kaufmann landed a backflip off his bull to score 81 points and take home the cash.
