LAS VEGAS - Two-time and reigning World Champion Bareback Rider Bobby Mote is having a great time at the 50th Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. The Culver, Ore., cowboy not only won his third round at this year's $5.625 million event, but he did it by tying the Wrangler NFR record for the second time in three days.
Mote wasmatched up in a dream pairing with Big Bend Rodeo's Spring Fling and produced a 91.5-point ride that once again tied the record set by Justin McDaniel and Will Lowe at last year's Wrangler NFR. Mote originally tied the record while winning Round 5 two days before with the same mark on Classic Pro Rodeo's Big Tex. The win moved him past Steven Dent into the No. 1 spot in the Crusher Rentals PRCA World Standings with $183,146, $58,504 of which has come in Las Vegas
Mote wore a permanent grin after realizing a dream by riding the horse on the sport's grandest stage.
"I’ve dreamed about getting on her at the NFR so many times," said Mote who finished four points ahead of Kaycee Feild for the win. "She’s real quick out of the bucking chute, and generally the trick with her is getting your feet to come to you right when she hits the ground. A lot of horses, you’ll spur them out and hold for one or two jumps, but if you do that with her, a lot of times she’ll get ahead of you. She took that second jump so fast, I didn’t get my feet to come to me, and I thought I was done. She just sat up and didn’t move ahead for 12 seconds.
"She’s a legend, and I’m just so tickled I got to get on her."
The second tie of the 50th Wrangler NFR came in steer wrestling in Round 7, with Trevor Knowles and Curtis Cassidy posting matching 3.4-second runs. They finished two-tenths of a seconds ahead of reigning World Champion Jason Miller and each earned checks worth $15,009. Neither cowboy has had the Wrangler NFR they hoped they might, but sharing first place turned things around for the pair of cowboys.
"I'm happy to be going to the South Point to get a buckle tonight," said Cassidy, who is riding AQHA Steer Wrestling Horse of the Year Willy in Las Vegas. "I didn't know how brave I should be on the start, and I didn't know if he was going to set up (stop) more or less than the last time he (the steer) was out, so I just went at him and hoped for the best."

Knowles switched from his horse Reba to Lee Graves' horse Jessie in Round 4, and it has paid off for him.
"I wasn't getting a very good start (on Reba), and I was just running them too far down the arena," Knowles said. "I didn't want to wait around until the end of the week to give myself a chance to win, so I had ot fix something."
Six-time and reigning World Champion All-Around Cowboy Trevor Brazile broke through with his first tie-down roping round win of the 2008 Wrangler NFR in Round 6 and did the same thing in the team roping in Round 7. Brazile and partner Patrick Smith stopped the clock in 3.9 seconds to win the round by two-tenths of a second ahead of Matt Sherwood and Randon Adams, who rank first and second in the world, respectively, in their disciplines.
Brazile and Smith were finally able to put everything together for a run that gave them a round buckle and strengthened their grip on the Wrangler NFR average lead.
"We've had little things happen all week that kept us from winning big dough," Brazile said. "But we work together as a team, we came here with a plan, and we're going to stick to it and see how it works. The strategy coming here was to make the run we made tonight every night. I didn't do anything different tonight than I have any other night, we just didn't have any glitches."
Smith was equally happy to grab a round win.
"We've had a really good time out here this week," Smith said. "We came to Vegas with the attitude that we're going to have fun and take it one steer at a time. The way we roped tonight is what got us in the lead in the average. We just know that if we keep making our run, the average will take care of itself and hopefully put us in position to win the world title. This is going to definitely help our cause tonight, but we still have a long way to go."
Saddle bronc rider Cody Wright has seen his lead in the Crusher Rentals PRCA World Standings fall to the red-hot Billy Etbauer, but he helped his cause greatly with a Round 7 victory to close the gap between himself and the five-time world champion. Wright, of MIlford, Utah, won his second round of this year's Wrangler NFR with an 88.5-point ride on Bar T Rodeo's Round Robin, finishing four points ahead of 2006 World Champion Chad Ferley.
Etbauer, who placed in five out of the first six rounds, was bucked off Big Bend Rodeo's Devil Lady, so Wright's $16,767 first-place check brought him within $12,000 of Etbauer's lead. Etbauer leads with $204,195, while Wright is second with $193,059.
"I've always wanted to have him," Wright said of Round Robin. "I've been at a lot of rodeos he has been at. I've just never been lucky enough to have him, but I would save all the times I have wanted to get on him for tonight."
A pair of no-times and two runs of more than 10 seconds had tie-down roper Jeff Chapman mad heading into Round 7, and he used that emotion to fuel a winning run that put $16,767 in his pocket. Chapman, who owned the Wrangler NFR record from 1997-2003, stopped the clock in 7.3 seconds to win the seventh performance by two-tenths of a second ahead of Round 4 winner Clint Robinson.
Chapman was relieved to head to the winner's circle after a rough few days in Las Vegas.
"I finally got close to the barrier for a change," Chapman said. "That's what Joe Beaver's been telling me every night -- to get off my butt and get closer to the barrier. I finally did get closer to it, and it made a big difference tonight. I knew he was a good calf, just right down the middle of the herd. From what I've been drawing all week, it was a welcome change."
It had been five rounds since Mike Moore covered a bull and earned a check, and he did both in grand style in Round 7. Moore, of Kankakee, Ill., rode Franklin Rodeo's Devil in Savo for 85.5 points to edge Bobby Welsh for the top spot and earn $16,767.
"I didn't know that bull," Moore said. "He bucked so hard, but I talked to Kelly Armstrong, the guy who raised that bull. He told me he was probably going to give me a big fake to the right and then go left, and I'm glad he told me that. If I'd been ahead of that bull, I would have bucked off on the first jump."
Simply put, Lindsay Sears is on a roll. She won her third round in five days with a rodeo-best 13.56-second run, .24 seconds ahead of second-place Cassie Moseley. With reigning World Champion Brittany Pozzi-Pharr finishing out of the money in Round 7, Sears' world standings lead grew by $16,767. Sears is atop the list with $258,125, while Pozzi-Pharr is second with $196,346. Sears' 13.56-second run was just four-hundredths of a second off Brandie Halls' Wrangler NFR record.
"It's all about Martha," said Sears, who has earned $73,558 in Las Vegas. "She keeps getting stronger and stronger. I knew she was going to be on tonight. She just nailed it. I hardly had time to think, especially between the first and second barrels. Tonight's run is the quickest I've ever run in this arena. Martha has already exceeded all of my expectations, so we will just go at it each night and will be thrilled with whatever happens."
