LAS VEGAS - There are two roller coasters in Las Vegas for visitors to enjoy, but team ropers Garrett Tonozzi and Kinney Harrell have found a roller coaster of their own at the 50th Wrangler National Finals Rodeo inside the Thomas & Mack Center this year. They began this year's Wrangler NFR with back-to-back wins in Rounds 1 and 2, then struggled to times of 17.2 and 18.2 in the third and fourth performances to behind in the average race. Their Las Vegas ride went back up -- way up -- in Round 5 as they picked up their third round victory of the rodeo in front of a crowd of 16,686 with a 3.6-second run. That mark was just one-tenth of a second off the Wrangler NFR record set by Clay Tryan and Patrick Smith and a full 1.1 seconds faster than second-place Chad Masters and Michael Jones. It pushed their Wrangler NFR earnings to $50,300 apiece, the most of any contestant at this year's $5.625 million event.
That money has helped Tonozzi and Harrell climb from 15th to second and third place, respectively, in the Crusher Rentals PRCA World Standings. The fifth-round win helped erase bad memories from the previous two rounds.
"I made a couple mistakes the last few nights," Harrell said. "I missed my slack on one steer, and the steer we had last night was a little different than what we anticipated him to be. I'm just glad everything went smooth again tonight."
The duo has been gunning hard all week and decided before the rodeo to take an aggressive approach at this year's Wrangler NFR.
"When we ran the steers through before the rodeo started, we talked about it and thought if things went right, we were hoping we could get the record," Harrell said. "That's pretty much what we're trying to do every night. I haven't seen the video yet, but I felt like I had one little bobble there tonight that might have kept us from getting it. Garrett has headed as good as anybody ever has in the first half of this Finals."

Bareback riding was a shootout in Round 5, to say the least. Eight cowboys posted rides of at least 85 points, with two-time and reigning World Champion Bobby Mote taking the round title by tying the Wrangler NFR record of 91.5 points. Mote, of Culver, Ore., teamed with Classic Pro Rodeo's Big Tex for the record-tying score, matching the mark set by Justin McDaniel in the third round of last year's Wrangler NFR and tied by three-time World Champion Will Lowe in the 10th round last year.
Mote was thrilled and honored to tie the record.
"It feels awesome," said Mote, who has earned $41,737 in five days in Las Vegas. "Will (Lowe) and Justin McDaniel set it last year, and they are great bareback riders who were on great horses. Just being in this arena is an honor."
Mote's score was just one point ahead of Cimmaron Gerke's 90.5-point score on Calgary Stampede's Knight Rocket and pulled him within $12,000 of Steven Dent's lead in the Crusher Rentals PRCA World Standings. Dent leads with $177,671, while Mote has $166,379 in earnings. The ride was a whirlwind for the talented cowboy.
"There was a lot of stuff going on," Mote said of the record-tying ride. "I never had time to stop and think about what it felt like, but that horse was strong. His first couple jumps, he really moved away and all of a sudden on one jump, he blew straight in the air. It seems like I got tapped right then, and he couldn’t have felt any better after that. The horse wasn’t easy, and he did everything right. He’s a big horse, he fit me, he was honest, and he kept getting better the longer the ride went."
Six-time World Champion Cody Ohl won the tie-down roping for the second time in three days after stopping the clock in 7.3 seconds, three-tenths of a second faster than Scott Kormos. Ohl, of Hico, Texas, has now earned $37,861 at the Wrangler NFR this year and is beginning to get "dialed in" in the building where he has won all of his world titles. Ohl got a calf he liked and continued his go-for-broke approach that netted him a Round 4 win.
"I've had a bunch of good calves, but they've all gone left so far," Ohl said. "It's given me a little bit of a blind spot over there (on the left). Finally tonight, I got a calf that went right, and I was pumped. I let him beat me out of the chute a little bit. I'm in a position where I need to win first every night. If I didn't take my shot then, I wasn't going to even have a throw, so it all worked out."
The battle atop the tie-down roping world standings continued to grow more interesting in Round 5, with Hunter Herrin finishing third in 8.2 seconds to earn another $10,006 and climb within $720 of Josh Peek's lead. Peek earned his first check of the week by finishing sixth with an 8.9-second run, but Herrin leads the Wrangler NFR average with a 42.6-second total time and has earned $38,131 so far in Las Vegas.
Parity set in during the steer wrestling in Round 5, with the top three spots going to bulldoggers who had combined to win four checks in 12 chances in the first four rounds. Stockton Graves won his first round of the 2008 event in 3.9 seconds, while Ken Lewis and Todd Suhn were just one-tenth of a second behind him when the dust had cleared. Graves, who was 11th of 14 steer wrestlers to make their run, stayed focused even though the times posted before his run weren't as lightning fast as in previous rounds.
"You're still going out trying to be 3.2," Graves said. "If you back off at all here, you're probably going to be a no-time, especially in that pen of steers. You just keep going at 'em, trying to be fast."
Graves, of Newkirk, Okla., took over the Wrangler NFR average lead thanks to the win, holding a total time of 20.8 seconds through five performances. He has earned an event-best $39,483 so far to move to seventh place in the Crusher Rentals PRCA World Standings.
All eyes were upon five-time World Champion Billy Etbauer in the saddle bronc riding in Round 5, as he had drawn the horse -- Kesler Championship Rodeo's Cool Alley -- that had carried him to Wrangler NFR record 93-point rides back-to-back years in 2003 and 2004. It was Shaun Stroh, however, who stole the show and claimed the round buckle, spurring Big Bend Rodeo's Kool Toddy for 87.5 points. Etbauer was later bucked off Cool Alley, leaving Stroh with his first career Wrangler NFR round win.
"I darn sure absolutely feel blessed making it here (Wrangler NFR) twice before, and being able to win a round is icing on the cake," said Stroh, who is competing in his third Wrangler NFR this year. "I knew the horse. I’d seen that horse around for a couple of years now. Everybody rides that horse well. They’ve been a lot of points everywhere on her. I was pretty excited when I found out I had her. I wish I'd had her a couple of times throughout the year prior to this. She felt strong the whole way. It felt good."
Stroh's score was 1.5 points better than Bradley Harter's 86-point score on Stace Smith Pro Rodeos' Big Jet. Cody Taton is the only bronc rider who has covered all five of his horses thus far and leads the Wrangler NFR average standings with 409.5 points.
Reigning World Champion Bull Rider Wesley Silcox had to make major sacrifices just to qualify for this year's Wrangler NFR after breaking his right leg in Bremerton, Wash., on Aug. 24, and his sacrifices are beginning to pay off. Silcox, of Payson, Utah, held onto Diamond G Rodeo's Crush Boss III for eight seconds and was rewarded with an 89.5-point score, one point more than Wrangler NFR rookie Spud Jones. Jones, of Tohatchi, N.M., earned his score aboard Four Star Rodeo's Shakedown to earn his first check of the 10-day event.
Silcox exacted some revenge on the bull, who had previously sent him to the turf earlier this season.
"I had him in Molalla, Ore., and I rode him for about six seconds before I lost my rope and he bucked me off," said Silcox, who has placed in two consecutive rounds. "I've seen him a couple of other times, too. He did what he's always done, and it felt really good. He went out there and jumped and turned back into my hand to the right. He just kind of rears out of there and spins to the right and just kind of gets stronger as he goes; he's just an outstanding bull."
The world's top two barrel racers continued to shine in Las Vegas in the fifth round. Reigning World Champion Brittany Pozzi-Pharr won her second round in a row, posting a 13.80-second run, while current world No. 1 Lindsay Sears was second with a time of 13.87 seconds. Sears, who won the third round, placed in her third consecutive round and has $224,591 in earnings to Pozzi-Pharr's $183,095.
"Stitch has really never been a go-round horse," said Pozzi-Pharr, who went 43 rounds before winning her first career Wrangler NFR round in Round 4. "We've always done better in the average, but he has really come alive in this arena. We are only halfway through this rodeo, so anything can happen. Things are feeling pretty good right now. Stitch is feeling perfect, and I'll just keep riding and see what happens."
Five-time World Champion All-Around Cowboy Trevor Brazile will have to wait another day to officially clinch his sixth all-around gold buckle. Second-place Steven Dent is still mathematically alive, but Brazile would have to not win another check in Las Vegas for Dent to have a chance. Brazile has $270,770 to Steven Dent's $155,655 and likely will make things official in Round 6.
INJURY REPORT: Bareback rider Josi Young did not compete in Round 5 and is out for at least two more rounds due to a contusion and strain of his pelvis, and fellow bareback rider Ryan Gray is listed as probable after suffering a concussion in the fifth performance. Steer wrestler Wade Sumpter sat out Round 5 and will miss at least one more round due to a torn right pectoral muscle, and 2006 World Champion Saddle Bronc Rider Chad Ferley is listed as probable for Round 6 after sitting out Rounds 4 and 5 with a fractured left wrist on his riding arm.
