RENO, Nev. (September 13, 2009) - The Professional Bull Riders, Inc. (PBR) took the top 40 bull riders in the world to “The Biggest Little City in the World,” Reno, Nev.,, for three performances of non-stop action on September 11-13. At the Reno Invitational brought to you locally by Rancher’s Reserve, stop no. 26 on the prestigious Built Ford Tough Series (BFTS), Team Copenhagen bull rider J.B. Mauney (Mooresville, N.C.) was one of only two bull riders to ride all four of his bulls and took the Reno Invitational event title. He totaled 355.25 points and pocketed a check for $45,760. With his fourth win of the 2009 season, he moved from third to second in the BFTS World Standings and closes in on current world no. 1, Kody Lostroh.
Mauney kicked his weekend off with a bang as he took the round one victory after riding the bull, Slider, owned by Plummer/Larson/McKee, for 89.25 points. He followed that up with an 87.25 point ride on the bull, Little Bo (4C’s/Sills/Barker), splitting fifth and sixth place in round two. Mauney split second and third in the third round after taking on D&H Cattle Company’s bull, Fired Up, for 88.25 points, giving him a total of 264.75 points and a first pick in the Championship Round Bull Draft. The North Carolina cowboy took the bull, Troubadour, owned by Julio Moreno Bucking Bulls, and rode him for 7.7 seconds. He pushed the Pike Electric Challenge button and after reviewing the ride, replay judge Jeff Shearer overturned the initial ruling and Mauney was scored. He garnered a 90.5 point ride, locking up a third place finish in the Built Ford Tough Championship Round and the Reno Invitational event win.
“I matched up with him at the 2008 World Finals and he bucked harder here than he did there,” Mauney said from the winner’s circle. “I knew it was close so I decided to hit the button and risk the $500 fine. I knew I had the tail of the rope all the way down and luckily it worked out.”
New Mexico cowboy L.J. Jenkins (Texico, N.M.) took second place at the Reno Invitational after totaling 353.5 points, becoming only the second rider to cover all four of his bulls over the weekend. He collected a check for $21,650. Third place went to Brazilian superstar Renato Nunes (Buritama, SP, Brazil) who rode three of four bulls for 267.5 points and $12,072. Fourth place went to Caleb Sanderson (Kissimmee, Fla.) who totaled 259.5 points and rounding out fifth place was fan favorite Wiley Petersen (Fort Hall, Idaho) who rode for 259.25 points.
Reno was the 9th and final regular season stop on the 2009 PBR Bull Team Competition. Fourteen teams have been formed, each competing for their share of a total tour purse of over $500,000 throughout the 2009 season. The team, Team Boogerman, took first place and the $10,000 check after totaling 135.75 points, beating out second place team, Western Colloid, who ended the event with 131.5 points.
