GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The U.S. Border Patrol Invitational presented by Cooper Tires treated fans to two action packed evenings of the best bull riding in the world. In its ninth consecutive year in Grand Rapids, Mich., the 27th stop of the elite Professional Bull Riders’ (PBR) Built Ford Tough Series presented by Wrangler (BFTS) showcased the top 45 bull riders taking on the best animal athletes from throughout the country at Van Andel Arena. North Carolina fan favorite bull rider J.B. Mauney (Mooresville, N.C.) walked away with top honors, taking his first event win of the 2008 season.

During the first round of competition, Mauney scored 86.25 points on Tweety Bird, owned by Chad Berger Bucking Bulls. In the second round of action, he topped The Geetus of D&H Cattle Co., for 85.25 points. During the Built Ford Tough Championship Round, he was awarded a re-ride bull and got on Crosswired, owned by D&H Cattle Company where he scored an event high, 93 points, and took first place in the final round. Mauney, one of only two men to ride all three of his bulls, finished the weekend with a total of 264.5 points and added $29,523 to his World Standings earnings.

“It feels good to win any bull riding especially the Border Patrol Invitational because I respect what they do and it is an honor to win their event,” Mauney said. This win awarded him with enough points to jump from fifth to fourth place in the BFTS World Standings.

Daisy Rookie of the Year contender Reese Cates (Carthage, Texas) claimed second place overall as he totaled 254 points. In the first round, Cates received 82.5 points aboard Mark Ward’s One Horn Willie. In round two, he took on Devil Dog (Hale/Hicks & McCracken) for 85.5 points which put him in twelfth place going into the Built Ford Tough Championship Round. Cates rode Chad Berger/Clay Struve/Julie Rosen’s top bull, Sir Patrick for 86 points, leaving him not only in second place in the final round, but in the overall standings. Cates added a check for $15,243 to his pocketbook. This also gave him enough money to surpass Texas bull rider Pistol Robinson (Burleson, Texas) in the 2008 Daisy Rookie of the Year standings.

PBR veteran and fan favorite Ross Coleman (Molalla, Ore.) finished third place in the overall event standings. He rode his first round bull, Why Not Minot (Chad Berger/Roger Ward) for a fifth place finish and 87.25 points and then tamed his round two bull, Never Enough, owned by Chad Berger Bucking Bulls, for 88.5 points, splitting second and third place in the round. Those two rides gave him enough total points to enter the Built Ford Tough Championship Round in first place. Coleman took on Mark Ward’s bull Bust-a-Move, but was bucked off before the eight second whistle. He finished with 175.75 points on two bulls and added $10,528 to his World Standings money.

Fourth place was claimed by Canadian cowboy Aaron Roy (Asquith, SK, Canada) who finished the weekend with a total score of 175.25 points and took home a check worth $6,492. Current number two bull rider in the world Valdiron de Oliveira (Aparecida de Goiania, GO, Brazil) rounded out the top five with 172.5 total points and $7,373.

Two records were broken at the U.S. Border Patrol Invitational presented by Cooper Tires in Grand Rapids, Mich. Two-time and reigning PBR World Champion Justin McBride (Elk City, Okla.) surpassed the $5,000,000 mark in career earnings during Friday night’s competition when he won $15,000 during the Grand Rapids Grudge Match. This made McBride not only PBR’s All-Time Money Earner, but also the richest cowboy in history. Another record that went down was one currently held by both McBride and world number one Guilherme Marchi (Leme, SP, Brazil) for the most scored rides in a single season. Marchi rode his round one bull, Whirlybird (Lacey Berger/Ande Hawks), making it his 58th ride in 2008---one more ride than he and McBride completed in all of 2007.

The race for the PBR’s million dollar world title takes the top 45 bull riders in the world to Jacksonville, Florida for The Built Ford Tough Shootout on September 19-20. The VERSUS network airs PBR events every Saturday and Sunday evening. Be sure to check www.pbrnow.com for upcoming cities, ticket information, and complete broadcast times.

BEHIND THE CHUTES:

Enterprise Rent-A-Car’s “Ride with the Best” Bonus:
As the winner of round two at the Jack Daniel’s Invitational, Nick Landreneau (Sulphur, La.) was eligible to compete for the $5,000 Enterprise Rent-A-Car “Ride with the Best” bonus during round one of the U.S. Border Patrol Invitational presented by Cooper Tires. He took on the bull, Big Rig, but was bucked off before the eight seconds; therefore, D&H Cattle Company was awarded the $5,000 bonus.

As the winner of round one in Grand Rapids, Mich., Bryan Richardson (Dallas, Texas) was eligible to compete for the $5,000 bonus during the second round of competition. He took on the bull, Dirty Dozen, but was bucked off before the eight seconds; therefore, the stock contractors, Chad Berger/Roger Ward, were awarded the $5,000 bonus.

As the winner of round two, Team Enterprise rider Kody Lostroh (Longmont, Colo.) will be eligible to compete for the bonus at the 28th BFTS stop in Jacksonville, Fla.

Ford Truck Moment of Truth Bonus:
Ross Coleman (Molalla, Ore.) was in the lead going into the Built Ford Tough Championship Round and ultimately did not win the U.S. Border Patrol Invitational presented by Cooper Tires event title. As the $5,000 bonus was not claimed, it will increase to $10,000 at The Built Ford Tough Shootout in Jacksonville, Fla., on September 19-20. The bonus grows by $5,000 each week if it is not claimed. Once claimed, it returns to $5,000.

Ford Super Duty Challenge:
As the U.S. Border Patrol Invitational presented by Cooper Tires event winner, J.B. Mauney (Mooresville, N.C.) has qualified for a chance to compete at the PBR Built Ford Tough World Finals, against all other 2008 Built Ford Tough Series event winners, for $50,000 toward the purchase of a 2009 Ford Super Duty Truck. The Ford Super Duty Challenge contestant who finishes the highest in the event aggregate during the 2008 PBR Built Ford Tough Finals will win the Ford Super Duty Challenge.

Salem NationaLease Bull of the Event:
Say I Won’t Gunner (Chad Berger/Clay Struve) earned Bull of the Event honors with a score of 45.5 points in the Built Ford Tough Championship Round in Grand Rapids. This honor is acknowledged by an award of $1,250 going to the top bull of each event as determined by the PBR judges’ bull score.

J.B. Mauney (Mooresville, N.C.) recorded the highest marked ride of the event when he scored 93 points on Crosswired (D&H Cattle Company) during the Built Ford Tough Championship Round of the U.S. Border Patrol Invitational presented by Cooper Tires. Consequently, he earned a $1,000 bonus.

The rider who achieves the highest score at each BFTS regular season event, excluding the PBR World Finals receives a bonus of $1,000 for the accomplishment. The PBR athlete who achieves the highest marked qualifying ride during the entire 2008 BFTS regular season, excluding the PBR World Finals event will receive $25,000, while second and third place finishers will be awarded $10,000 and $5,000, respectively. The bull rider who achieves the highest marked ride through the course of the entire 2008 PBR BFTS World Finals will earn an additional $10,000.

McBride chose the bull Baby Blue, owned by D&H Cattle Company, while Marchi was given the bull, Husker’s Terror of Chad Berger/Jim Quintaine. McBride covered his bull while Marchi was bucked off; therefore, McBride claimed the $15,000 prize money.
