Standing Room Only Crowd Greets Bullriders in Atlantic [Aug. 7, 2009] The Extreme Bullriding Tour stop in Atlantic, Iowa, has a reputation - a very good reputation. With a capacity of close to 5000 the stands are traditionally full so it was no wonder that at 4:30 PM, three hours before the event started, there were already 200 people in the stands. By starting time it was hard to find even a place to stand! The bullriders of the National Federation of Professional Bullriders (NFPB) and the Bullriders of America (BOA), the two sanctioning bodies of the event, felt the electricity in the crowd and gave them their best. Is Iowa steak losing its sizzle?[Jul. 5, 2009] The Iowa steak sizzling on the backyard grill still wafts a smoky fragrance over neighborhoods.
The subtle marbling of corn-fed fat in the meat still produces the same juicy succulence.
But what that steak isn't generating these days is profits, for Iowa's cattle producers or for restaurants. Processing plants and grocery chains aren't making much money from beef, either.
Economists and restaurant owners say the night out for a steak dinner at a restaurant has joined the $4 coffee latte as a symbolic victim of the recession. The tough times are exacerbated by longer-term trends — including aging farmers, consumer health concerns and corn prices that are historically high even after a sharp drop last week.
