When Iowa cowboy, Bill Applegate. was seriously injured in a horse accident in late June that sent him to Critical Care Unit at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa, his friends began plans immediately for a benefit. On July 13th the benefit team roping and auction was held at the Leon Rodeo Grounds. It was a beautiful day with a great turnout. The results - between the team roping, donations, concessions and auction they raised $15,500 for the Applegate family.

Bill has not only been a long time competitor in Iowa rodeo, winning championships in both team roping and bull riding, but he has also been a leader in the sport. He is a charter member of the Iowa Rodeo Cowboy Association and has always been willing to assist other contestants both young and old in any way he could.

Bill is currently a patient at On With Life in Ankeny, Iowa, a rehabilitation center for head injuries. He is making progress and is starting to say some words.
