National Western Stock Show and Rodeo

DENVER, Colo. - A sold-out Denver Coliseum got to see two outstanding rides at the eighth performance of the National Western Stock Show Rodeo.

The first came in bareback riding when Tim Shirley rode Cajun Queen for 90 points. Shirley from Conifer is now at the top of the leader board in two categories. His 90-point effort aboard the horse named Flying Five Rodeo’s Cajun Queen set a new arena record, and gave him the lead in the second round and over-all standings.

He is just coming off of his first Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (NFR) qualification. He left Las Vegas last December with over $33,000 in his pockets and finished the season in 11th place.

Kanin Asay, from Powell, Wyo., stole the show in bull riding when he scored 93 points on David Bailey’s bull Lucky Strike. Lucky Strike has a buck-off percentage of over 96 points and has been considered by some as unrideable.

“I never doubted that I could ride him,” Asay said. “When I found out that I had drawn him, I screamed. I had prayed that I’d get him and I was so excited.”

Asay also competed at the NFR last December. He earned over $50,000 and finished the year in 9th place in spite of having to sit out most of the season. Last July, he got stepped on at the rodeo in St. Paul, Ore., and had a ruptured spleen. He was taken from the arena to the ambulance to meet a helicopter which took him to the hospital in Portland, Ore. He now is grateful to be alive and takes nothing for granted.

“I could so easily have died,” he said. “It’s only by the grace of God that I am alive and have been able to do what I do.” Doctors expected him to be out of competition for at least six months, but two months later he was back riding bulls. He is now giving his faith the credit for getting him to the top of the leader board in Denver. His 93 took the lead in the second round and gave him the over-all lead with 175 points on two bulls.

There are two performances at the National Western Stock Show Rodeo on Sunday. Performances begin in the Denver Coliseum at 2 and 7:30 p.m.
