National Western Stock Show and Rodeo

DENVER, Colo. - Josh Peek made a tremendous run in the tie-down roping in the Denver Coliseum Thursday night and followed it up Friday afternoon with another solid effort to take the over-all lead.

The Pueblo, Colo., resident’s first time of 7.6 seconds leads the first round. In the second round, he is sitting fourth with an 8.7. While he has several days to see how he finishes, his 16.3 second total leads the standings by over two seconds and he will most likely be back here on Sunday, Jan. 25.

Peek has done well at other building rodeos winning titles at both Houston and San Antonio in the past. He would like nothing more than to add a Denver championship to his resume.

Also hoping to be back here for the finals is Austin Ambrose from Fletcher, Okla. Ambrose became the second man to ride two bulls here on Friday. During the matinee performance he rode the Southwick Rodeo bull named Fudgecicle for 85 points. Combined with his previous score of 80, he now has the over-all lead with 165 points on two. Corey Maier, from Timber Lake, S.D., is in second with 162.

Another Colorado cowboy, Heath Ford, from Greeley is the new leader in bareback riding. He is second in the first round and tied for the lead in the second round. He has a total score of 159 points.

All of these contestants will be anxiously waiting through the next week of competition to see where they finish in the rounds and if they will be in the top twelve of their event to advance to the finals. At stake are Jeffery Scott Fine Magnetics championship buckles and over $200,000 in prize money.

Rodeo action continues in the Denver Coliseum on Saturday with performances at 11 a.m., 3:30 and 8 p.m.
