DENVER - Clif and Tuf Cooper will be battling it out in the tie-down roping at the final performance of the National Western Stock Show Rodeo.
Clif, who qualified for last year’s College National Finals Rodeo moved into fourth place with two solid runs on Saturday with a total time of 17.9 seconds. Younger brother Tuf took the roping world by storm last year. He turned 18 in March, joined the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association and qualified for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo where he won over $80,000.
Tuf is the sixth of twelve tie-down ropers. Josh Peek, from Pueblo, Colo., leads the race for the National Western championship with a time of 16.3. Also among the ropers that will be featured here on Sunday is eight-time world champion Fred Whitfield, from Hockley, Texas.
Luke Branquinho and Brittany Pozzi-Pharr are the only 2008 champions that have qualified hoping to win another Denver title. Branquinho, from Los Alamos, Calif., is fifth in the steer wrestling standings. Pozzi-Pharr has won the barrel racing titles here the past two consecutive years. The Victoria, Texas, resident and her great horse Stitch qualified in sixth place.
The final performance of the National Western Stock Show Rodeo will start at 2 p.m. on Sunday.
