National Western Stock Show and Rodeo

DENVER - As the National Western Stock Show Rodeo is winding down, rodeo contestants are seeing that consistency is the key to qualifying for Sunday’s finals.

A perfect example of that is Jed Moore, from Cheyenne, Wyo., who has ridden two bulls for 86 and 84 points. He had his second ride here on Thursday morning and is now in second place in the over-all standings with 170 points, just five points behind fellow Wyoming rider Kanin Asay, from Powell.

The Thursday evening performance saw several more contestants that are hoping to have similar success. This was their first round competition and they will return to the Denver Coliseum for their second round on Friday afternoon.

Leading off the night was Tyrel Nelson from Cheyenne who had an 84-point score in bareback riding. In team roping, a 4.8-second run for Rodney Glenn Wilson, from Canyon, Texas, and Jody Pinkert, from Lubbock, Texas, put them in the running.

Tie-down roping saw three runs under nine seconds to give all of those cowboys hopes of qualifying for the finals. Justin Macha from Needville, Texas, had the fast time of the night at 8.2. Chris Neal from Muldrow, Okla., was next at 8.6 and Shane Slack from Idabel, Okla., had an 8.8.

Savannah Reeves, from Dublin, Texas, made her debut run in barrel racing Thursday. She had a blazing fast time of 15.24 seconds, the second fastest run of the rodeo here so far.

Former Wrangler National Finals Rodeo qualifier Corey Navarre is making a bid to return to rodeo’s championship event. He plans on hitting the circuit at least one more time and showed rodeo fans here that he has returned to form. Navarre, from Weatherford, Okla., had an 88-point ride on Border Denial.

There are two performances of the rodeo here on Friday, at 2 and 7:30 p.m.
