National Western Stock Show and Rodeo

DENVER - Jed Moore is one happy bull rider.

They Cheyenne, Wyo., resident has been in Steamboat, Colo., competing at the 35th annual Cowboy Down Hill Ski Race. He emerged as the victor in both the Dual Slalom Race and the Chaotic Western Stampede on Skis.

In the slalom race, competitors negotiate the course, rope a person, saddle a horse and the one who has the fastest time emerges as the champion. In the Stampede, all of the competitors line up and race down the Headwall with the one reaching the bottom first winning. All of the skiers at the Downhill must be competitors in the National Western Stock Show Rodeo.

After his big win in Steamboat, Moore’s confidence was up when he came back here to get on his first bull. Moore rode Red Eyes, a bull owned by Triple V Rodeo Company for 86 points. That puts him in a tie for fifth place.

The rodeo pays eight places in each of two preliminary rounds, and he has to wait through Saturday’s competition to see if he gets a check. However, another solid performance here Thursday morning will see him join other Wyoming bull riders in the final round. Kanin Asay still leads the over-all standings in bull riding. The Powell cowboy has a total of 175 points on two rides. Clayton Savage from Casper is fifth over-all with 162.

California cowboys have taken the lead in the team roping. Spencer Mitchell from Colusa and Justin Davis from Cottonwood had times of 4.3 and 4.8 seconds in the first and second round for a total of 9.1 seconds. They now lead the standings by over half a second.

There are two performances of the National Western Stock Show Rodeo on Thursday, at 10:30 a.m. and 7 p.m.
