National Western Stock Show and Rodeo

DENVER, Colo. - The rodeo at the 103rd National Western Stock Show got underway on Saturday with contestants making their first appearance here.

They came back on Sunday for second round action. All of the competition here is back-to-back meaning that they compete in consecutive performances. This allows them to keep their traveling expenses to a minimum and get down the road to other rodeos.

One of those contestants is Corey Maier from Timber Lake, S.D. Maier is the first and only bull rider to be successful in both of his attempts. During the first performance, he rode for 84 points, then came back and was 78. His total of 162 puts him 75 points ahead of the man in second place, Cory McFadden from Coleman, Texas, who is 87 points on one head.

In bareback riding, Wyatt Hancock, from Taylor, Ariz., is the early leader with 155 points on two rides. Hancock is the brother of world champion bull rider Cody Hancock.

All of the contestants at the rodeo compete in two preliminary rounds throughout the next 19 performances. The top 12 over all will advance to the finals where the National Western Stock Show Rodeo champions will be crowned. At stake is pockets full of money and hand-made sterling silver and gold trophy buckles from Jeffrey Scott fine magnetics.

The next three nights of action in the Denver Coliseum will see riders from the Professional Bull Riders trying to win a National Western buckle. The Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association returns on Thursday, Jan. 15 at 7 p.m.
