SAN ANTONIO - Prior to the first edition of the Xtreme Bulls competition at the San Antonio Stock Show Rodeo, Clayton Savage was second in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association world standings.
After his success here, he more than doubled his earnings and will most likely move ahead of Kanin Asay, a fellow Wyomingite who failed to earn a check here. Savage, who is from Casper, won the first round of competition, the final round and the over-all categories netting $23,810.
In the first round, it was Wackey Weed, that took Savage to the pay window. After the eight-second ride was over and judges added up their scores, he had a 91.5 on the U.S. Smokeless Tobacco Company Scoreboard. That was the highest marked ride of the night. In the final round, Savage found his name next to the bull Rompus, again owned by Sammy Andrews. This time, he had an 89-point ride, tying him for first place in the finals with Steve Woolsey from Payson, Utah.
Woolsey ended up in second place over-all, collecting $15,500. Reigning world champion J.W. Harris from May, Texas, was third earning $13,503. The fourth place winner was former National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association champion Tate Stratton from Stanley, N.M. Stratton earned his title while attending Western Texas College at Snyder. He earned $9,907 on Thursday night.
Total prize money at the Xtreme Bulls was $79,900. The second edition of this competition will be Saturday, Feb. 21 at 1 p.m. with more bull riders trying to earn their share of the nearly $80,000 in prize money.
Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association competition starts here on Friday at 7:30. Bareback riding, steer wrestling, team roping, saddle bronc riding, tie-down roping, women’s barrel race and bull riding will be featured.
