CHEYENNE, Wyo. ---July 30, 2010 --- A year ago, Bobby Welsh left Cheyenne Frontier Days satisfied that he had ridden all three of his bulls, but disappointed that he finished in second place instead of winning the championship.
Welsh, from Gillette, Wyo., put himself in a winning position here again, thanks to an 89-point effort on Dakota Rodeo’s Big Tex. That first place finish earned him a check for a whopping $6,277. More importantly, the score was high enough to qualify him for Sunday’s finals regardless of his success here in the second round Saturday.
There were eight riders that made it to the whistle on Friday. With just two that have been successful in both round, and 16 advancing to the finals here, Welsh is set to make it back with one high score. Seth Glause, from Rock Springs, Wyo., rode here at the first performance. He scored 86 points on a Wyoming bull from Triple V Rodeo Company simply named Q. Glause held onto first place in the round until Friday’s rodeo when Welsh bumped him from the lead. Glause earned $4,812.
Another Wyoming cowboy, Will Farrell, from Thermopolis, snagged the third-place spot. Farrell had an 85 point ride on Friday to win $2,441. Hopefully Welsh and Farrell will have equal success on Saturday. Glause did not ride his second bull, so Welsh and Farrell are Wyoming’s best bet to keep the title in their home state.
The first round is now complete in all of the events here. The big winner so far is Tuf Cooper from Decatur, Texas. He had a 12.7-second run in tie-down roping to win $7,505. Unfortunately a no-time in the second round will keep him from any other opportunities here.
Right behind Tuf Cooper is his father Roy, known on the circuit as “Super Looper”, he is basically retired and rarely competes. It paid off for him here as he roped and tied a steer in 13.9 seconds to win $7,297.
Sam Spreadborough from Snyder, Texas, won the first round of saddle bronc riding with an 87, and he did it with a broken leg. Spreadborough who is originally from Australia broke both bones in his right shin at a rodeo in Weatherford, Texas, five weeks ago. He had surgery to put a rod in his leg and while it doesn’t bother him when he is riding, he certainly hasn’t regained his strength, nor is it completely healed. Spreadborough earned $5,060 here and is currently tied for third place in the overall standings to qualify for the finals.
The second round will be completed during Saturday’s rodeo performance. At that time, finals round qualifiers will also be determined. In the bull riding, 16 contestants will advance to the finals. The other events bring back at least 12 and will have up to 16 if there are ties.
