SAN ANTONIO --- Bull rider Douglas Duncan is no stranger to the winner’s circle, but the Alvin, Texas, resident may have had the biggest win in his career so far at the San Antonio Stock Show Rodeo.
He was the lone rider to last eight second in the final round at the second edition of Xtreme Bulls in the AT&T Center on Feb. 21. As such, he earned over $30,000, with $22,772 of that counting towards the world standings.
The field started with 40 of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association’s best bull riders. The top 12 scores advanced to the finals. Duncan was 87.5 points on Frontier Rodeo’s bull named Lightning Bug to place second in that round. Fred Boettcher from Rice Lake, Wis., won the round with an 88 point ride on Siverado Rodeo Company’s Monkey Wrench.
Duncan’s ride in the finals was on another bull from Silverado, this one simply named Bob. When the judges tallied up their scores, he had a 91.5 giving him the final round win and the over-all title. Because Duncan was the only man to ride in the final round, he received all of the $15,980 in prize money. However, only the first place winnings of $5,273 count towards the standings.
Prior to Saturday afternoon’s event here, he was ranked 14th in the standings with just over $9,000 in earnings this year. As last year’s Rookie of the Year, Duncan qualified for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo and is hoping to be there again in 2009.
Boettcher won $7,191 for his first-place finish in the long round, then finished second over-all with to add another $9,189 to his check book.
“I’ve gotten off to a good start this season,” Duncan said. “I’m going to keep my goals in mind and take care of business.”
Duncan did not have as much success at the rodeo, and did not qualify for Saturday night’s finals. However, he still won $2,334 here and it will all help to move him up in the world standings.
