SAN ANTONIO ---Bareback rider Davey Shields is changing a pattern that has been in place since he joined the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association in 1995.
“I’ve never had a good winter,” The DeWinton, Alberta resident said. “I’ve come to the buildings time after time, but never had any luck at all.”
That all changed on Sunday night in the AT&T Center when he won the first round of competition in the fifth bracket. Then, he won the second round on Monday and finished it all be winning the third round Tuesday.
Shields is the only contestant through five brackets of competition to win all three rounds. He is the high money winner here so far at $6,223. His third and final win came aboard Andrews Rodeo’s horse named Roly Poly. When the judges added up their markings, Shields had an 87-point ride. He will try to keep the trend going in the semi-finals on Wednesday night.
All five of the preliminary brackets of competition are now complete. The top four money winners from each bracket in each event advance to the semi-finals. A total of 20 contestants in bareback riding, steer wrestling, tie-down roping, team roping, saddle bronc riding, barrel racing and bull riding will be divided into the two semi-finals performances, 10 Wednesday and 10 Thursday. The contestants all have a clean slate and the four best will advance to Saturday night’s finals.
The six contestants from each semi-finals who do not win money will have another opportunity to qualify for the finals by competing in a wild card performance on Friday night. The best four out of 12 from the wild card will also advance to the finals, so a total of 12 competitors in each event will be competing for the championships here.
Champions in each event will be crowned at the final performance where contestants again start with a clean slate. The winner in each event will earn a check for over $12,000 and an $8,000 gas card to get them down the rodeo road throughout 2009. McCormick Foods is presenting the cards to the champion bareback, saddle bronc and bull rider. The steer wrestler, tie-down roper, team ropers and barrel racers will receive their bonus courtesy of Ocean Spray.
The semi-finals performances start at 7 p.m. on Wednesday and Thursday.
