SAN ANTONIO - It’s been five years since Canadian Davey Shields qualified for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo.
He has made the trip to Las Vegas to compete at rodeo’s championship event four times and knows what it takes to get there. Sheilds looks like he will be making a bid for a fifth qualification in 2009 if the San Antonio Stock Show Rodeo is any indication.
On Sunday night, he rode Vold Rodeo’s horse named Big Valley for 87 points to win the first round in the fifth bracket. He kept the momentum going with an 86-point ride on Monday night on Kenny Rodeo Company’s Little Brother. He has already won $4,148 here for his two first-place finishes and has one more opportunity to get a check.
Shields’ traveling partner Scott Montague from Rapid City, S.D., is also doing well. He has finished in a tie for second place both nights. Montague is second high in the money standings at $2,593.
All-around champion Trevor Brazile is making a bid for a spot in the semi-finals. He tied for second place with another all-around world champion, Ryan Jarrett, in tie-down roping. They both had times of 8.6 seconds and won $1,296. Brazile and his team roping partner Patrick Smith, from Midland, Texas, finished at the top of the leader board as well. With Brazile doing the heading and Smith heeling, they stopped the clock in 4.5 seconds to win $2,074.
These contestants will have their third and final performance on Tuesday trying to qualify for the semi-finals. Tuesday’s rodeo begins at 7 p.m.
