SAN ANTONIO --- Taos Muncy has had more success at the San Antonio Stock Show Rodeo in his three years as a member of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) than most have in their career.
Muncy, from Corona, N.M., joined the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association in 2007. That same year, he won the saddle bronc riding title at the AT&T Center, the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association championship and the PRCA’s world title.
After winning the gold buckle declaring that he is the best, Muncy returned to San Antonio in 2008 and was again successful. He finished third in the overall standings here and set an arena record along the way. In the final performance, Muncy rode the Kesler Championship Rodeo horse named Cool Alley for 92 points.
Then in April at Red Bluff, Calif., he broke both bones in his leg and missed most of the 2008 season. Muncy is back to his championship form and is ranked second in the PRCA world standings. He finished at the top of the leader board in the second round with an 83 point ride on Flying Five Rodeo’s Wind Chimes. He leads the third bracket in the money standings and looks to be a contender in the semi-finals.
Justin McDaniel, from Porum, Okla., won this rodeo in route to his 2008 world title in bareback riding. McDaniel was part of a three-way split in Thursday night’s bareback riding for first place. He rode the J Bar J horse named Tipped Off for 85 points. McDaniel shared the win with Ryan Gray from Cheney, Wash., and Paul Jones from Elko, Nev. They each earned $1,556. Jones also won money in the first round so he looks good for the semi-finals. If Gray or McDaniel are going to advance, they will need to be among the money earners in Friday night’s performance.
The third bracket of contestants will be making their third appearance at the AT&T Center on Friday, Feb. 13 at 7 p.m. hoping to win enough money to advance to one of the semi-finals which will be held on Feb. 18 & 19.
