SAN ANTONIO - The San Antonio Stock Show Rodeo is far from being over, but plenty of cowboys and cowgirls have already left with money in their pockets and plans of returning.
The second of five brackets was completed on Tuesday night when this group of contestants had their third round of competition. D.V. Fennell, from Neosha, Mo., was the big winner from the second bracket with earnings of $5,185. He will be back for the semi-finals. The bareback rider placed third in round one, then came back and won rounds two and three. At 35-years-old, Fennell is one of the older competitors in bareback riding. The event it widely thought of as the most physically demanding in rodeo because of the stress that it puts on contestants riding arms and upper body.
A rigging with a handle similar to that on a suitcase is places on the horse. The rider places his hand in the rigging and that is all that he holds on to for the required eight seconds. With horses jumping, bucking, kicking with their back feet and dropping back to the ground on their front feet, it is eight seconds of bone-jarring, ligament-pulling trauma to an arm.
Fennell won Monday night’s rodeo on Cervi Championship Rodeo’s Grakel Roan with an 87-point ride. He came back one point higher on Tuesday with an 88 on Harry Vold’s Hypnotic.
“They can tease me all they want to as long as I’m winning,” Fennell said of his younger counterparts. “I love giving them something to talk about.”
Cassie Moseley from Farwell, Texas put herself closer to a San Antonio championship and set a new barrel racing record along the way. Moseley is coming off of her first Wrangler National Finals Rodeo qualification. She now has set the standard in the AT&T Center arena by stopping the clock in 13.85 seconds. This is the sixth time the arena record has been broken this week.
With the new rodeo format, all of the contestants are going for it all every time they compete. At most rodeos, contestants are concerned about round performance, but also take into consideration where they are in the over-all standings. Here, the money they win in the rounds helps them advance to the next level, so every night is like a new rodeo. With that mindset, more arena records are likely to fall throughout the next 11 days.
The third bracket starts Wednesday with a new group of competitors making their first appearance here. Competition begins at 7 p.m. in the AT&T Center.
The third round of the second bracket will start at 7 p.m. on Tuesday. At the conclusion of that rodeo, the top four money winners in each event will be making their travel plans to come back here to compete in the semi-finals on Feb. 18 and 19.
