SAN ANTONIO --- The night after winning titles at the Fort Worth Stock Show Rodeo, J.W. Harris and J.J. Elshere set the standard at the San Antonio Stock Show Rodeo.
Elshere was smiling from ear to ear when he got off of the bucking horse named Hellbound from Big Bend Rodeo. He won over $10,000 in Fort Worth in saddle bronc riding with a total score of 332 points on four horses. Using the momentum that earned him that title on Sunday night, he scored an 85 to win the second round in the second bracket at the AT&T Center.
Harris rode three bulls to win the title at Fort Worth. He had a total score of 251 and won $11,512. He tied for first here on Monday with an 86-point effort on Cervi and Guidry’s bull named Wasp Springs. Joining Harris at the top of the leader board was Bobby Welsh from Gillette, Wyo. Welsh rode the Beutler Brothers and Cervi bull named Apache. They each earned $1,815.
Welsh won the first round here on Sunday night so added the money to his previous earnings of $2,074. With his success on two bulls, he is assured a spot in the semi-finals. The top four money earners from each bracket will advance.
Another contestant that earned her qualification to the semi-finals is Deb Renger, a former San Antonio champion barrel racer. Renger, from Okotoks, Alberta, has won both the first and second rounds and is the high money winner from all events in this bracket with earnings of $4,148.
The third round of the second bracket will start at 7 p.m. on Tuesday. At the conclusion of that rodeo, the top four money winners in each event will be making their travel plans to come back here to compete in the semi-finals on Feb. 18 and 19.
