SAN ANTONIO --- The first two days of competition at the San Antonio Stock Show Rodeo are now history.

Twelve contestants in bareback riding, steer wrestling, tie-down roping, team roping, saddle bronc riding, barrel racing and bull riding were narrowed down to four by virtue of three rounds of competition. Money was paid in the individual rounds only, and the top four money earners advance to the semi finals.

The highest money winner here so far is Chad Ferley, from Oelrichs, S.D. Ferley placed in the top two positions in each round and won $5,445. Ferley broke his arm at last year’s Wrangler National Finals Rodeo, switched riding hands to complete that competition but is back to form here.

Barrel racer and former San Antonio champion Kelly Maben had a tremendous two days here collecting $4,667. She broke the arena record at the second performance with a time of 14.15 seconds, then at the third performance Maben, and two other barrel racers had runs under 14 seconds. Mattie Little, from Ardmore, Okla., was the leader of the pack at 13.90. Sherry Cervi from Marana, Ariz., followed with 13.96 and Maben was just behind her at 13.97. All three of these women advanced to the semi-finals.

There were only two successful bull rides on Saturday night. Dave Samsel, from Haslet, Texas won with an 81-point effort on Beutler and Son’s Ariat Class Act. Second was Jarrod Ford, from Greeley, Colo., had an 80. These scores helped both of these NFR qualifiers advance to the semi-finals.

Fred Whitfield, from Hockley, Texas, is back in the winner’s circle along with Monty Lewis from Hereford, Texas. Whitfield has eight gold buckles to his credit and Lewis has one. They each earned $3,371 here so far.

There is one performance on Sunday, at 1 p.m. where the second bracket of competition will begin.
