PUYALLUP, Wash. -- Josh Peek, of Pueblo, Colo., was the busiest cowboy on the first day of the Ariat Playoffs at the Western Washington Fairgrounds Friday, and the most productive, too. Peek competed in two rounds of both the steer wrestling and tie-down roping and found himself in second place in both events at the end of the evening.

A model of consistency, Peek was second in the afternoon steer wrestling session and second in the evening to stand second overall with a time of 7.8 seconds on two head, a tenth of a second behind leader Billy Bugenig of Ferndale, Calif.

A pair of fourth place results was good enough to place Peek second overall in the tie-down standings with a time of 16.9 seconds on two head. Barry Burk of Ponca City, Okla. leads the event in 16.3 seconds.

Peek entered the $348,000 Puyallup Pro Rodeo, second round of the Playoffs concluding the Wrangler ProRodeo Tour, knowing that he was going to have to produce if he was going to be among the elite 12 who make it to the third round in Omaha, Sept. 27-29.

The Coloradoan is 10th in the Wrangler ProRodeo Tour standings in steer wrestling -- just ahead of Bugenig -- and 18th in tie-down roping. The Puyallup round of the playoffs features a total of 24 contestants (or teams in team roping) in each event, and is split into the two, 12-contestant rounds. The second group of 12 will compete at 1 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. (PT) Saturday to complete the first round. The sudden-death, semifinal round, which will feature the top eight competitors in each event after the completion of Saturday's two rounds, is scheduled to get under way at 1 p.m.(PT) on Sunday with the sudden-death, four-person final round immediately following.

The DeMoss brothers are 1-2 in the saddle bronc riding standings after the first day with Cody DeMoss, the older brother and a four-time Wrangler NFR qualifier, leading the field with 163 points on two head. Cody posted 81 points on Calgary Stampede's Juvenile Quest in the afternoon performance on Friday to lead the pack in the first round. He posted an 82 on Korkow Rodeo's Big Ugly, the second highest of the night session, to easily move him into the top spot in the average race.

"I knew I had better bring all I had tonight with Big Ugly and luckily for me it all worked out," Cody said. "I am in a good position but I will have to wait to see what happens tomorrow to see where I finish. Hopefully, I can remain atop the leaderboard."

Heith DeMoss is right behind him in the average race with 156 points on two. Heith is currently second in the first round with an 80 and posted a 76 on Friday night aboard Korkow Rodeo's Crazy Horse to move into second behind his brother.

Justin McDaniel, already second in the Wrangler ProRodeo Tour bareback standings, had the high score in both rounds Friday, receiving an 86 on Calgary Stampede's Knight Rocket in the afternoon session, then coming back with another 86 on New West Rodeo's Northern Lights in the evening.

McDaniel's combined score of 172 puts him seven points ahead of Kelly Timberman of Mills, Wyo., the 2004 world champion bareback rider.

"I was really glad to draw the two horses I drew today," McDaniel said. "And it seems like I have done well at all the Tour rodeos leading up to the (Ariat Playoffs). I have been really focused this year to make it to the Finals."

Fox Sports Net will broadcast four separate one-hour shows from Puyallup, beginning the week of Sept. 22. Visit the Tour page on prorodeo.com for more information.
