DALLAS – It was a good night to be a world standings leader named Cody during the first round of the Wrangler ProRodeo Tour Championship hosted by the Interstate Batteries Texas Stampede. Four-time world champion tie-down roper Cody Ohl and saddle bronc riding leader Cody DeMoss added $3,917 to their world standings leading totals with first-round victories at the $470,000 Dallas event.
Ohl, of Hico, Texas, stopped the clock in 7.5 seconds to win the tie-down roping by four-tenths of a second over Matt Shiozawa and push his PRCA-record season earnings total to $157,235.
“I tied the calves this morning and thought there were three great calves, and I drew one of them,” said Ohl, whose horse, Luke, was named 2006 AQHA/PRCA Tie-Down Roping Horse of the Year. “I was tickled coming into tonight knowing I had one of the good calves. Everything just clicked. Dallas has been good to me, and I like it here.”
DeMoss, of Heflin, La., drew Beutler and Son Rodeo’s Fox Trot for the first time in his career, and was pleasantly surprised by his score. DeMoss, the runner-up to the world title the past two years, won the round with an 86-point score and increased his world standings leading total to $132,131.
“When I looked at the draw today, I kind of thought that was one of the horses you didn’t want to necessarily try and win the round on, but on paper we can’t ever get it right,” said DeMoss, who is nursing groin and knee injuries. “I’ve seen that horse ever since my career started. I’ve always wanted to have her, but the way the pen looked tonight, it didn’t look like she’d be enough. At first, she didn’t feel like she was doing very much, but I looked back on the replay and she was doing some wild stuff. It worked out good.”
In bareback riding, Royce Ford of Briggsdale, Colo., took the top spot with an 88-point ride on Cervi Championship Rodeo’s Multi-Chem Baby Doll. He finished a point ahead of traveling partner and world standings leader Will Lowe of Canyon, Texas, and Jason Jeter of Mansfield, Texas. It was a horse he was familiar with and excited to draw once again.
“I was happy to have her,” Ford said of the horse. “I remember she wasn’t a very big horse, but just fast and electric. You’ve got to have fast feet to keep up with her. I’ve got the NFR made, but any step closer to that world championship’s gonna help out a lot. I’m excited to do good here.”
Steer wrestling was also a tight-knit affair, with Linn Churchill of Valentine, Neb., winning the round with a 3.7-second run. His time was just one-tenth of a second faster than the times of Dru Melvin of Tryon, Neb., and Jason Lahr of Emporia, Kan.
“Dallas is a great place to be in November,” said Churchill, who won the Cheyenne (Wyo.) Frontier Days this summer. “I drew a good steer and threw him down quicker than anybody else.”
The team of Shain Sproul of Benson, Ariz., and Cory Petska of Lexington, Okla., won the round with a 4.7-second run, four-tenths of a second faster than Speed Williams of De Leon, Texas, and Clay O’Brien Cooper of Morgan Mill, Texas. Sproul was ranked 13th in the world heading into the event, while Petska was 12th.
“I had a feeling it was our turn,” Petska said. “We haven’t won much in the last couple months, so I was hoping this would be the place that would turn things around and get our confidence going before Vegas.”
In the barrel racing, Tana Poppino of Big Cabin, Okla., with a 12.86-second run, 11-tenths of a second ahead of Brenda Mays of Terrebonne, Ore. They were the only two barrel racers to complete the cloverleaf pattern in less than 13 seconds.
“I just feel blessed to be here,” Poppino said. “There are so many good horses here, and it can be anyone’s game. I will try and get a better start tomorrow night. Coming into the alleyway from the holding pen on the left sort of messed up my first barrel, so I will try and get it right.”
The rank bucking stock won most of the battles in the bull riding, as only two riders made the eight-second whistle. D.J. Domangue, who entered the event ranked 21st in the world standings, picked up a much-needed $3,917 with an 89-point score on Rafter H Rodeo’s Boss Man. Bobby Welsh took advantage of a re-ride and posted a 79-pointer on David Bailey Rodeo’s Smokin Gun to win $2,938 and second place.
For Domangue, of San Angelo, Texas, the ride was sweet redemption on the bucking beast.
“I actually got on him in Omaha in the third round, and he slammed me,” Domangue said. “He did the same thing tonight, just kicked out there and went around to the right. He’s a hard bull to ride, and I was glad to have him again. Praise God I got him ridden.”
The rodeo’s second round begins Saturday, Nov. 11, at 7:30 p.m. CT at the American Airlines Center, with the top eight contestants in each event after the second round advancing to the semifinal round on Sunday, Nov. 12. The semifinal round will pare the field down to four contestants per event, and those four will compete in the championship round.
Scores will be zeroed after the second and semifinal rounds, with the crystal cups going to the winners of the championship round on Sunday afternoon. The event will be televised by CBS on Saturday, Nov. 18, at 2 p.m. ET.
