National Western Stock Show and Rodeo

DENVER, Colo. - It was a tough day for rodeo contestants at the National Western Stock Show Rodeo on Sunday.

During the matinee performance, they had their first round competition, then came back at 6:30 in the evening for their second round. Through seven events, there were only four contestants to move into the top four in the over-all standings.

A duo from Texas had the most success of the day. Tommy Edens from Gatesville and Wade Clayton from Needville moved to the top of the team roping standings. With Edens doing the heading and Clayton catching the heels, they had times of 4.9 and 5.0 seconds. They were definitely the most consistent ropers in the Denver Coliseum today. During the matinee, Coleman Proctor from Miami, Okla., and Jake Long from Coffeyville, Kan., had the fast time at 4.6. Then a no-time in the evening took them out of the standings.

Barrel racing saw Brenda Seely from Lander, Wyo., move into second place over all with a total time of 30.82. She moved into fourth place in both rounds, but with plenty of good barrel racers yet to compete, whether or not she gets a check remains to be seen.

The 2006 tie-down roping champion has the opportunity to qualify for the finals that are just a week away. Justin Scofield from St. Lawrence, S.D., moved into fourth place over all with a total time of 19.4.

There were two bull riders on Sunday that were successful on both rides. Tater Hins from Huron, S.D., moved into second place with a total score of 168 points. Colin McTaggart, a two-time Wrangler National Finals Rodeo qualifiers from Las Vegas, Nev., has a total of 149 and is currently sixth.

There are two rodeo performances at the National Western Stock Show on Monday. The Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association event begins at 2 p.m. The Martin Luther King Jr. African American Rodeo starts at 6 p.m.
