Cowboys Face Tough Competition at National Western[Jan. 19, 2009] DENVER, Colo. - It was a tough day for rodeo contestants at the National Western Stock Show Rodeo on Sunday...During the matinee performance, they had their first round competition, then came back at 6:30 in the evening for their second round. Through seven events, there were only four contestants to move into the top four in the over-all standings. By Susan Kanode
Bareback and Bull Riding Highlight Denver Rodeo[Jan. 18, 2009] DENVER, Colo. - A sold-out Denver Coliseum got to see two outstanding rides at the eighth performance of the National Western Stock Show Rodeo.
The first came in bareback riding when Tim Shirley rode Cajun Queen for 90 points. Shirley from Conifer is now at the top of the leader board in two categories. His 90-point effort aboard the horse named Flying Five Rodeo’s Cajun Queen set a new arena record, and gave him the lead in the second round and over-all standings. By Susan Kanode
Duvall wins steer wrestling at SandHills Rodeo[Jan. 11, 2009] ODESSA , Texas - There is a lot to Spud Duvall. - He's a businessman, an athlete, a director on the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association board. - Most of all, though, he's a cowboy - a bulldogger, to be specific - and he comes by it naturally. By Ted Harbin
Outhier anxious for his return to ProRodeo's finale[Jan. 9, 2009] For four Decembers, Mike Outhier has watched the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo from a comfortable couch in the middle of his living room...He didn't like it too much. The Utopia, Texas, saddle bronc rider would’ve been much more comfortable in the middle of nasty bucking horses for 10 rough days in Las Vegas, home of ProRodeo's championship. Injuries sidelined the four-time Wrangler NFR qualifier for three years, but last year was more disappointment than doctor’s orders. By Ted Harbin
LeMond takes two loops at his hometown rodeo[Jan. 7, 2009] ODESSA, Texas - It was twice the fun for a regional cowboy on Wednesday night at the SandHills Stock Show and Rodeo at the Ector County Coliseum.
LeMond, a first-time Wrangler National Finals Rodeo qualifier in 2008, returned home to compete in the third performance of the Odessa based rodeo. The Andrews cowboy competed in tie-down roping and team roping Wednesday night and is also scheduled for the steer-roping competition that’s scheduled for Friday. By Ted Harbin
Ryan Gray finds comforts of home at SandHills Rodeo[Jan. 4, 2009] ODESSA, Texas - It was good and bad for a couple of Odessa College rodeo team alumni.
Bareback rider Ryan Gray of Cheney, Wash., had the best score of the night, matching moves with the Harry Vold Rodeo Co. bronc Dust Devil for 84 points.
DeMers continues his confident streak at SandHills Rodeo[Jan. 3, 2009] Cody DeMers has spent forever, it seems, away from rodeo's biggest stage, the National Finals Rodeo.
Last year, he struggled early, then steamrolled through the end of the season to miss the championship by one position, finishing 16th in a sport where the top 15 in each event qualify. He’s hoping to avoid a slow start, and hoping to return to Las Vegas to play for the biggest paydays available in the sport. By Ted Harbin
Professional Rodeo Cowboy Association News - And the winners are...first Heartland champions crowned[Oct. 12, 2008] WACO, Texas - Seven cowboys made history on Oct. 11 as inaugural Heartland ProRodeo Series champions were crowned at the Heart O' Texas Fair Complex...Dave Worsfold (bareback riding), Stran Smith (tie-down roping), Rodney Burks (steer wrestling), Kobyn Williams (saddle bronc riding), Bubba Bohac (team roping – heading), Twister Cain (team roping – heeling) and Bobby Welsh (bull riding) have forever bragging rights as the first cowboys to wear Heartland ProRodeo Series overall champion buckles in the year-long series and end-of-season championships created to support Heartland rodeos - those with prize money less than $30,000. Professional Rodeo Cowboy Association News - Heartland ProRodeo Championships lift tie-down roper to Wrangler NFR[Oct. 11, 2008] WACO, Texas - Being crowned an inaugural Heartland ProRodeo Series champion on Oct. 11 at the Heart O' Texas Fair Complex will be an honor, indeed. But some cowboys, like Texas tie-down roper Scott Kormos, got an extra perk at the nine-performance competition. With a second-place finish Friday night, Kormos' $6,816 in prize money from Waco should move him into the Top 15 in the Crusher Rentals PRCA World Standings and unofficially qualify him for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo, Dec. 4-13, in Las Vegas.
