FORT WORTH – It took 22 performances to change the second round leader in the bareback riding at the 2009 Fort Worth Stock Show Rodeo.

Two-time Wrangler National Finals Rodeo champion Bobby Mote proved the saying ‘better late than never’ is definitely true. The veteran cowboy from Culver, Ore., drew Western Rodeo’s horse Big Easy and according to Mote the bronc does not live up to his name.

“He’s a big, strong horse and not easy to ride, but I was tickled to get him,” said Mote. “I had this horse at the short round in Salinas, Calif., last year, so I knew if I rode him, I could be a lot of points.”

Running off the momentum of his afternoon ride, Mote posted an 80-point ride at Thursday night’s performance for second place, only to be out done by traveling partner Ryan Gray. Gray, from Cheney, Washington, scored 81 points on Western Trails’ horse Aladdin. He is a former college champ, who won the title while attending Odessa (Texas) College.

Mote’s performance over the last two days puts him third overall with a total of 242 points on three rides. It is safe to say that Mote will be here for Sunday night’s final round.

Barrel racer Tana Poppino made the fastest run of the entire rodeo completing the pattern in 16.69 seconds and taking over the lead in the second round. The Big Cabin, Okla., cowgirl had trouble in the matinee performance, incurring a 10-second penalty, but came back strong and fast for the evening’s performance. Although she is out of the overall standings her time in the second round will be hard to beat.

Brian Curtis made the evening’s bull riding exciting by scoring 85 points on Rafter G’s bull Get Smart. Curtis donned his bright lime-green chaps to out smart the bull for the required eight seconds. For his efforts, he is now in second place in the second round. Curtis did not successfully ride his first bull in the afternoon, but looks to leave here with a hefty check for his second round effort.

There are two performances at the Fort Worth Stock Show Rodeo presented by Southwestern Exposition and Livestock Show on Friday. The 25th performance starts at 2 p.m. and the 26th begins at 7:30 p.m.
