FORT WORTH – It was a day of honoring and remembering active and retired military members at the Fort Worth Stock Show Rodeo.

Those that are serving and or have served in the armed forces received free admission to the matinee and evening rodeo performances Wednesday thanks to Encore Acquisition Company of Fort Worth.

The admission may have been free but the performances were anything but low budget. Scores were high and times were fast, creating change in the leader boards.

The matinee performance was all about the horse riding and bull riding cowboys. Bareback rider Jared Smith, 2008 Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association Rookie of the Year, started things out with an 81-point ride on Jim Kenney’s horse Dakota Babe. Although the Snyder, Texas, cowboy won’t make it back for the final round, he has his eye set on collecting a hefty check for his fifth-place position in the third round.

It was a New Mexico bull rider and a New Mexico bull that closed the afternoon performance and thrilled the crowd. Tate Stratton from Stanley, hung on for the required eight seconds to Mr. Wilson, a bucking bull out of Carlsbad, owned by Jim Kenney. Stratton received 87 points for the effort and took over the second place spot in the first round. Thanks to a successful second ride in the evening’s performance and scoring 75 points, Stratton has all but secured a spot in the final round, Sunday, Feb. 8.

The timed-event contestants made Wednesday night’s rodeo their own. Team ropers Ty Blasingame from Olney Springs, Colo., and his partner Bobby Baize of Anthony, N.M., caught their second steer in 5.7 seconds, to move into fourth overall and are nearly assured an invitation back to the final round.

Not to be outdone by her male counterparts, Womans’ Professional Rodeo Association barrel racer Annesa Self smoked the pattern in 16.82 seconds, moving to second in the round and fourth overall. The Valley View, Texas, cowgirl has seated herself in a great position for the upcoming final round.

There are two performances at the Fort Worth Stock Show Rodeo presented by Southwestern Exposition and Livestock Show on Thursday. The 23rd performance starts at 2 p.m. and the 24th begins at 7:30 p.m.
