FORT WORTH - Todd Suhn was born in South Dakota, raised in Nebraska, went to college at the University of Wyoming in Laramie, but for the past four years has lived just outside of Weatherford, Texas.
The steer wrestler’s resume is extensive. He’s qualified for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (NFR) 12 times and won and throughout his 15-year career as a member of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association. Traditionally, his success in the arena comes in the summer months. He has won titles at the Reno Rodeo in Nevada, Wyoming’s Cheyenne Frontier Days and many more.
Suhn is trying to change that this year and win money all season long. He has already started doing that with a tie for first place in the first round at the Fort Worth Stock Show Rodeo. He and Dean Gorsuch from Gearing, Nev., both had times of 3.6 seconds and each earned $5,335. Suhn came back on Saturday night during the fourteenth performance to run his second round steer. He had the fastest time of the night at 3.9 seconds and now leads the round and overall standings.
“I’ve gotten a little money here through the years,” Suhn said. “I’ve never won a round and never come back for the finals in first place.”
Suhn will have to wait through next Sunday’s matinee performance to see where he will be in the standings, but he most assuredly will be in contention for the title in the Will Rogers Coliseum.
Changes have been made for the timed-event contestants at this year’s rodeo. Previously the chute they run the cattle through has been moved in and out during the performance. This year, the stock show and Priefert Ranch Equipment have made them permanent.
“I think its better,” Suhn said. “Before they rattled and moved around. It’s a lot more stable and it’s the same for every run.”
Suhn was riding his 16-year-old horse named Moosehead, who he also credited with his success. “We’ve been rehabbing my horse and he’s feeling really good right now,” he added. “He’s as solid as they come. We got good steers, Moosehead worked good, everybody did their job and I’m happy it all worked out the way it did.”
There are two performances at the Fort Worth Stock Show Rodeo presented by Southwestern Exposition and Livestock Show on Sunday. The 15th performance starts at 2 and the 16th at 7:30 p.m.
