FORT WORTH - Rodeo fans missed Matt Shiozawa at last year’s Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (NFR).
The Chubbock, Idaho, tie-down roper is using the Fort Worth Stock Show Rodeo to make a bid for the 2009 edition of rodeo’s championship event. Shiozawa leads the second round of competition with an 8.6-second run. That equaled his first round time and gave him the over-all lead with a total of 17.2 seconds on two runs.
Shiozawa has competed at the NFR three times, the last in 2007. He qualified for the 2006 event thanks in part to winning the championship at the San Antonio Stock Show Rodeo. He knows from experience just what getting money won early in the year can do for a rodeo contestant’s season. He’s trying to have the same success here and has already won a piece of the pie. His 8.6-second run in the first round put him in a tie for fifth place and he got a check for $1,978.
A local contestant is looking to mark his place in history with a Fort Worth win. Blake Doyle, from Granbury had a 4.8-second run in the steer wrestling on Tuesday night. He tied with Darrell Petry from Beaumont, Texas, and they are tied for second. What’s important for Doyle is his total time. After his success on Tuesday night, he now leads the over-all standings with a total time of 8.6 seconds and looks good to qualify for the finals on Feb. 8.
Kyle Hughes from Olney Spring, Colo., took the lead in the second round of steer wrestling with a blazing fast run of 4.4 seconds. Hughes has yet to qualify for the NFR, but has made several appearances there as a hazer, helping other steer wrestlers make their runs. Success here could put him in position to be finding a helper for Las Vegas of his own.
The saddle bronc riders in the seventh performance were the most successful of the rough stock riders. This was their first of three appearances and several of them had solid rides. The leader of the pack was Chet Johnson from Gillette, Wyo., who rode the Harry Vold horse named Pine Cone for 81 points. He is currently third in the first round, but with two more horses to get on, definitely has the potential to move up in the over-all standings.
The eighth performance of the Fort Worth Stock Show Rodeo presented by Southwestern Exposition and Livestock Show will begin at 7:30 on Wednesday night.
