Three-Event Cowboy Stays Busy in Fort Worth

FORT WORTH, Texas --- Trell Etbauer might just be the busiest contestant at the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo.

The Goodwell, Okla., resident is competing in saddle bronc riding, tie-down roping and steer wrestling. To compare, it would be like Deon Sanders and Bo Jackson, who both played in the National Football League and Major League Baseball competing in both games the same night. Imagine Deon Sanders running the ball for Dallas in one play and then having to change gear and run next door to bat for the New York Yankees.

While Etbauer gets to compete in the same arena, he has to switch gears, change equipment and go from staying on the back of a horse that just wants to buck him off to one that is trained to stay under him.

Etbauer competed in saddle bronc riding at the Wednesday matinee performance. He then came back Wednesday night in that event and tie-down roping. The rodeo started at 7:30 but Etbauer’s preparation was well before that. At 6 p.m., he saddled the roan horse he calls Rambo, rode him to get him warmed up and ready, then put him in the stall to wait for the roping.

Preparation for the saddle bronc riding entailed putting on his chaps, Phoenix Vest, changing his boots and thinking about staying in the saddle. The effort got him a 77-point ride, one of the high-marked rides of the night. Then it was time to get ready for tie-down roping.

Anthony Lucia did a trick roping act between the two events giving Etbauer just minutes to change his boots, get out of his vest and chaps, get his horse and a rope and ride into the arena. He had the fast time of the night at 7.9 seconds,

That run is tied for second place in the second round and he is now looking forward to Sunday night’s finals. He is tied for sixth place in the over-all standings with Tuf Cooper from Decatur, Texas with a total time of 19.1 seconds on two runs.

Etbauer will be back here Friday night to compete in the second round of steer wrestling. He was just over six seconds in the first round, so will need to be really quick to have a chance to compete in the finals in two events.

“I like to be in all three events in the same performance,” Etbauer said. “Then I don’t have time to think about it, I just go out there and do my job and hopefully it works out.”

Not only is Etbauer an all-around athlete with skills such as speed, strength and agility, he expects the same out of his horses. The horse that he rode in tie-down roping will be in the arena as a hazing horse during steer wrestling. Most saddle bronc riders throw their gear bag in a camper on the back of a pickup, Etbauer’s goes in a trailer with two horses, steer wrestling and tie-down roping saddles, various tack and some ropes.

“I’ve always competed in multiple events,” he said. “Hauling horses is part of that. My dad has helped me with all of it. It’s a lot of work, but I’d sure rather be busy. “

Etbauer’s father is two-time world champion saddle bronc rider Robert Etbauer. His uncle Billy Etbauer has won five world titles and his other uncle Dan has multiple qualifications for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo and now works as a pick-up man in the arena.

Robert, Billy and Dan were raised in South Dakota before moving to Oklahoma. While they all specialized in saddle bronc riding, it wasn’t unusual for any of them to enter a roping event occasionally. Now, Trell is carrying the legacy further by competing at both ends of the arena on a regular basis. He has won the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association Linderman Award for the past two years because of his success. He qualified for the College National Finals Rodeo three times and tied for the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association steer wrestling title in 2005. He put his professional rodeo career on hold while he was attending Oklahoma Panhandle State University where he graduated with a degree in Industrial Technology.

A big win here at the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo in any of his events will help him in the all-around standings, put him on his way to another Linderman Award and could set the path for his first Wrangler National Finals Rodeo qualification.

Chad Denton from Berrry Creek, Calif., is the new leader in bull riding. He and Ted Bert from Modesto, Calif., were the only riders to last for eight-seconds at the matinee performance. They were two of nine to ride in the evening. Denton had an 83 and 82 for 165 to take the over-all lead. Dave Samsel from Stephenville, Texas, is now second with 161. Bert is seventh with 144.

There are two performances of the World’s Original Indoor Rodeo on Thursday at 2 and 7:30 p.m.
