SAN ANTONIO, Texas --- Corey Navarre is a veteran bull rider with a storied career and added another notch to his belt at the San Antonio Stock Show Rodeo on Saturday.

Navarre, from Weatherford, Okla., won $24,449 at the San Antonio Stock Show Rodeo Xtreme Bulls event and set a new record for the highest total score in the AT&T Center. In the first round of competition, he was one of 16 riders to make the whistle with a 93-point effort on Four L Diamond S Rodeo’s Big Iron. That ride was worth 93 points and $7,191. It also qualified him for the finals where he got on D & H Catlle Company’s Marmaduke and was 89. He was the only rider to make the whistle in the finals and earned another $5,273. Then, his total of 182 points earned the over-all title and $11,985.

The previous record was 180 points on two head. Dustin Elliott from North Platte, Neb., had that when he won this event in 2005. B.J. Schumacher also had 180 points when he won in 2007.

In addition, since he had the only score in the finals he earned $10,706 that would have gone to other rodeo contestants had they made it to the whistle. However, that money won’t count towards world standings. Navarre finished the 2009 season in third place after qualifying for his third Wrangler National Finals Rodeo.

With the money that he won here, he should be on his way to a fifth qualification. Navarre is the only man to qualify for the College National Finals Rodeo, the Professional Bull Riders World Finals and the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo in the same year and he did that twice.

Prior to his win here, he was ranked 21st in the world standings with $8,427. When they add the money he won here, it will definitely help his position.
