LAS VEGAS - A year ago, saddle bronc rider Cody Wright came into the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo leading the Crusher Rentals PRCA World Standings, but saw his hopes of a world title dissolve after being disqualified for missing his horse out in the 10th round. He won't have to worry about losing his grasp on glory in the 10th round this year after clinching his first world title thanks to a win in Round 9 and a third consecutive buckoff by five-time World Champion Billy Etbauer. Wright, who leads the Wrangler NFR average, won Round 9 of the 50th Wrangler NFR in front of 17,784 at the Thomas & Mack Center with an 85-point ride on Frontier Rodeo's Wild Bill, while Etbauer was sent flying by Frontier Rodeo's Flint Hills.
Wright, of Milford, Utah, now has $219,832 for the season, with Etbauer in second place with $204,195. Wright was reserved and appreciative after finding out the news he had finally realized his dream.
"It is a dream come true," Wright said. "This is what I have been shooting for for a long time. I had not run the numbers. I have been telling my wife (ShaRee) to keep it low. It’s been an awesome season. I had a great winter and great summer … It’s been a great year."
Locked in a tough battle with the ever-dangerous Etbauer, Wright sought inspiration in the words of his former coach, three-time World Champion Saddle Bronc Rider and Wrangler NFR General Manager Shawn Davis.
"I was talking to Shawn and trying to get some things ironed out," Wright said. "I wasn’t riding that great in the first couple of rounds, and he came back there and he said ‘Make them take it from you. Don’t give it to them.’ I thought I better start doing what I have done all year."
Two-time and reigning World Champion Bobby Mote came into the ninth round reeling from a no-score in Round 8 and knowing he needed to win big in the final two rounds to have a shot to defend his title. He took a step in that direction by winning the ninth performance -- his fourth round win of the event -- with an 88.5-point score on Three Hills Rodeo's Peaches N Cream. Mote's score was a half-point better than Justin McDaniel's mark aboard Beutler & Son's South Point and added $16,767 to his world standings lead.
Mote was happy to become this year's second four-round winner at the Wrangler NFR.

"Obviously your goal is to win every time you nod your head. But there’s 14 other guys who think that too, so sometimes that doesn’t happen," Mote said. "I’m awfully happy to have a chance to go and get another go-round buckle."
Because of the no-score in the eighth round, Mote ranks ninth in the Wrangler NFR average -- which pays $42,999 for first place -- so he needs some help if he is going to win a third gold buckle.
"I’m going to dang sure go and give it all I can," said Mote, who has earned $199,913 this season. "I’ve been in that position before where I’ve had to win. Both times I’ve won the world, I had to win the 10th round. I’ve been there, and it’s funny, you feel like you rodeo 364 days and it comes down to a one-header. You can see what you’re made of, and I’m looking forward to the challenge. I’ve got a fair bit of momentum and feel like I’m riding well and am healthy, so I’m excited for it."
McDaniel, who has earned $80,589 in Las Vegas, leads the average standings and ranks third in the world standings with $171,264, so he is within reach of Mote.
Few contestants, if any, have been hotter in the late rounds of the 50th Wrangler NFR than steer wrestler Trevor Knowles. Knowles, of Mount Vernon, Ore., won a share of first place for the third consecutive day, tying 2006 World Champion Dean Gorsuch for the ninth-round victory. Knowles, who tied Curtis Cassidy for the Round 7 win and won the eighth performance, stopped the clock in 3.4 seconds to tie Gorsuch and earn another $15,009 in Las Vegas.
Both cowboys ride the talented horse Jessie, owned by 2005 World Champion Lee Graves. Knowles was thrilled with his third consecutive round triumph.
"I had a good steer that they said I could probably win the round on tonight," said Knowles, who has earned $60,036 at this year's Wrangler NFR. "They were 3.7 and 4.8 on him earlier this week, and I got a whale of a start again, and that was the end of it."
Gorsuch, who ranks second to 2004 World Champion Luke Branquinho in the Crusher Rentals PRCA World Standings, knew he needed a solid run to stay in contention for the gold buckle heading into Round 10.
"I'm not thinking about that at all," said Gorsuch, who has earned an event-best $60,171 in Las Vegas. "Like Trevor (Knowles) and I were talking about, we would just like to go out and win as much money as we can. Here before long, we will be running at $2,000 day monies instead of $17,000 day monies. We just want to win as much as we can, and it lays where it lays."
Determining the world champions in the team roping, as is the case with most of the events this year, will come down to the wire in Round 10. Matt Sherwood, the 2006 World Champion Header, and partner Randon Adams won their first round of the 2008 Wrangler NFR with a 3.7-second run, five-tenths of a second faster than the teams of Speed Williams and Allen Bach and Derrick Begay and Victor Aros.
Sherwood added $16,767 to his world standings lead over Travis Tryan, while Adams jumped past Michael Jones into the No. 1 spot in the standings among heelers. They were ecstatic after Round 9.
"That was huge," said Sherwood, of Pima, Ariz. "We had come in with both of us real close to the lead, but dropped down so far in the average that we had to make it up in the rounds. It was a kind of do-or-die deal, so I got on a different horse that it would have been easy to lose my rope or miss on. But I knew we had to take a chance, and it paid off for us in a big way."
Adams knows he and Sherwood are going to be in a dogfight in the 10th round.
"It's been swapping back and forth all week and all year in both the heading and heeling," said Adams, of Logandale, Nev. "I've had some misfortune in a few spots this week, but that run tonight felt good, and now I just want to finish it out."
Tie-down roping is another event that will be a fight to the finish, as Hunter Herrin took over the No. 1 spot in the world standings from Trevor Brazile by finishing second to Tuf Cooper in Round 9. Cooper, of Decatur, Texas, won his first Wrangler NFR round in his first apperance with a rodeo-best 6.7-second run. Herrin, of Apache, Okla., was one-tenth of a second behind in 6.8, but now leads the world standings with $169,006. Brazile is second with $162,540, while Josh Peek is third with $156,475.
Cooper stands third in the Wrangler NFR average and fifth in the world standings and has an outside shot to join his ProRodeo Hall of Fame father Roy as a world champion.
"It feels awesome. Indescribable, really," said Cooper, who has won $47,055 in Las Vegas. "I’ve been waiting on this for a long time. I’ve won a lot of rounds at the NFR while I was roping the dummy, and I’ve been 6.7 here before, in my head. I’m stoked. I’m good in the average, and I took a chance tonight. I have an outside chance to win the world. I have to take a chance tomorrow night, too. I saw my start, and the calf was out in front of me perfect. I saw him out there, threw it as hard as I could, and when I saw it go on I just pulled on it. That was a great calf – the best calf I’ve had all week. I’m glad I put two wraps on him."
It took nine rounds, but 2006 World Champion B.J. Schumacher posted a qualified ride, one that gave him the round title by the slimmest of margins over Crusher Rentals PRCA World Standings leader Chance Smart. Schumacher, of Hillsboro, Wis., rode Cervi & Guidry's Vitalix Hot Diggity Damn for 89 points, a half-point better than Smart's mark aboard Rafter G Rodeo's Road Hazard.
Schumacher was thrilled to end his 0-for-8 streak at this year's Wrangler NFR.
"I didn't just ride one this time -- I won," Schumacher said. "I broke my bad luck streak by a lot. But everything needs to happen earlier in the week than it has. I can't win it (world title) now, and I know it, but I can get some of that money, so I will try to ride like I can and just see what happens this next round."
Smart's second-place finish gave him another $13,251 for the season to run his total to $193,168, but he stands seventh in the average, three qualified rides behind average leader J.W. Harris. Harris trails Smart $193,168-$165,438 in the world standings, but is in the driver's seat for the world title thanks to his Wrangler NFR average lead. It will all be decided in Round 10, and the winner won't be known until the dust has settled.
Even though she clinched her first world title following a win in Round 8, barrel racer Lindsay Sears hasn't slowed down. Just the contrary, as she guided mare Martha through the cloverleaf pattern in 13.53 seconds to win her fourth round in a row and fifth round overall. Sears, of Nanton, Alberta, finished nine-hundredths of a second ahead of Terra Bynum to win the round and increase her record season earnings total to $291,659.
As she has all week, Sears gave all the credit to her superstar horse.
"Martha makes my job easy," Sears said of the 2008 AQHA Barrel Racing Horse of the Year. "She has probably ruined my barrel racing career for the future because I will never find another horse like her. She is one-of-a-kind. I can hardly talk about her without getting emotional. I don't know what more to say about her than all that I have."
Sears has earned a rodeo-best $107,091 and is within reach of bull rider B.J. Schumacher's Wrangler NFR earnings record of $142,644 from 2006. She ranks third in the average and likely will become the first barrel racer to earn $300,000 in a single season.
INJURY REPORT: Six-time and reigning World Champion All-Around Cowboy Trevor Brazile suffered a Grade 2 sprain of his MCL in his right knee in the tie-down roping in Round 9, but will compete in Round 10 as he chases his second consecutive world title in the event. Saddle bronc rider Bobby Griswold suffered a concussion and strained neck in the ninth round and is listed as probable for the 10th performance, while bull rider Seth Glause will compete in Round 10 after suffering a right hip contusion at the hands of Andrews Rodeo's Notorious in Round 9.
