Brazile accomplishes rare sweep at Silver City, N.M.; McFarland breaks arena record with 92
Trevor Brazile went to Silver City, N.M., May 28-30, and everything he touched turned to gold.
The six-time and reigning All-Around World Champion Cowboy entered three events and won all three, along with the all-round title in the Southwest Horseman's Arena, the first such sweep he's managed since the Lewiston (Idaho) Roundup in 2006.
Brazile's wins in team roping, tie-down roping and steer roping paid $7,310, enough to move him ahead of Curtis Cassidy and back into the lead in the PRCA All-Around World Standings by $905.
"There aren't a lot rodeos where you have the chance to win three titles like that," Brazile said. "It feels great to leave knowing you did everything you could to help your cause."
With partner Patrick Smith, Brazile won both rounds in the team roping. He won one round of two in the tie-down roping, shared a round win with Rod Hartness in the steer roping and cashed in another. That's seven rounds of competition, four wins and five checks.
"They also had a (non-counting) jackpot roping at Silver City and I won that for about $2,200 more," Brazile said. "It was a nice week."
Brazile now leads the all-around and steer roping standings, is seventh in tie-down roping and eighth among team roping headers.
Tom McFarland shared the spotlight with Brazile at Silver City.
The Wickenburg, Ariz., bareback rider set an arena record with 92 points on Classic Pro Rodeo's Wise Guy, equal to the eighth best score in the event's history and two points off the world record, shared by Wes Stevenson and Will Lowe.
Luis Escudero, an Army Research Laboratory scientist based at White Sands, N.M., finished second to McFarland with an 88-point ride.
The other champions at Silver City were steer wrestler Tyrone Tsosie (9.9 seconds on two head), saddle bronc riders Taos Muncy and Cort Scheer (84 points each), bull rider Colin McTaggart (90 points) and barrel racer Kyna Schrader (17.46 seconds).
Fennell starts three-state victory tour at Old Fort Days Rodeo
After two major surgeries, D.V. Fennell had to be talked into coming back on the road by travel partner Justin McDaniel.
And, man, is he glad he listened.
The Missouri bareback rider was already in the top 10 of the PRCA World Standings entering the May 28-31 weekend and then strung together three wins in three states in three days to further advance his bid for his first Wrangler National Finals Rodeo qualification.
Fennell, 35, got the run started by sharing the bareback riding title at the Old Fort Days Rodeo in Fort Smith, Ark., with Tilden Hooper, each scoring 86 points on Harry Vold stock. Fennell then went on win at the Cherokee (Iowa) Chamber PRCA Rodeo with an 80-point ride on Barnes PRCA Rodeo's 2A1 and the Licking (Mo.) Chamber of Commerce PRCA Rodeo with an 82-pointer on Mid-States Rodeo Company's Native Son.
It all added up to $4,904, enough to move him from seventh to sixth, within $3,002 of his friend McDaniel, the reigning world champion in the event, for fifth place. Fennell's season total of $37,160 is closing in on his best full-season total of $44,140 in 2005, when he finished 22nd in the world.
The Old Fort Days also represented a big step back for steer wrestler Ronnie Fields of Oklahoma City, Okla., who qualified for the Wrangler NFR in 2004-06 but has missed the last two while recovering from a torn medial collateral ligament in his right knee.
By winning a round, placing in another and winning the average, Fields banked a rodeo-best $4,812 at Fort Smith and jumped from 38th in the PRCA World Standings to 20th. Fields' two-head time of 7.8 seconds was six-tenths-of-a-second better than runner-up Jeff Miller.
The other champions at Fort Smith were team ropers Nick Sartain/Kollin Von Ahn and Charles Pogue/Casey Chamberlain (10.3 seconds each on two head), saddle bronc rider Tyrell Smith (86 points), tie-down roper Clif Cooper (16.9 seconds on two head), bull rider Dylan Werner (87 points) and barrel racer Brittany Pharr (16.43 seconds).

The event has raised more than $96 million since the scholarship fund was launched in 1984, benefiting more than 4,300 San Antonio-area students in 95 areas of study.
Fred Petmecky, a commercial real estate agent and founder of Petmecky Interests in San Antonio, has been elected to a three-year term as president of the San Antonio Livestock Exposition, the non-profit organization that puts on the rodeo each year. Cody Davenport and Joe C. Souoles were selected as vice presidents.
