Father of world champion Reeves dies
Dean Reeves, the father of future ProRodeo Hall of Fame saddle bronc rider Tom Reeves, died May 25 from head injuries suffered when an all-terrain vehicle he was driving near his Eagle Butte, S.D., ranch overturned.

Reeves, 71, operated Reeves Quarter Horses on the Dean Reeves Family Ranch in Eagle Butte. The business was started in 1941 by Dean's father, Arthur, and is run as a complete quarter horse program that offers breeding genetics as well as finished ranch and arena performance geldings.

Tom Reeves, who won the 2001 World Championship, qualified for 18 National Finals Rodeos and will be inducted into the ProRodeo Hall of Fame on July 12, has always credited his father as being the inspiration for pursuing a career in rodeo and for his knowledge of livestock.

Services are pending. Dean Reeves is survived by his wife, Emma Lu; his sons Tom (Carmin) and Jim (Janna); and daughter Mary Reeves.

Dent has busy weekend
Roughstock cowboy Steven Dent earned paychecks at three rodeos during the Memorial Day weekend, which would have pushed him past Josh Peek and into second place in this week’s Crusher Rentals PRCA World All-Around Standings had he not unofficialed all three.

Dent, of Mullen, Neb., earned all-around honors at the Abdallah Shrine Rodeo after winning $1,063 in bareback riding and saddle bronc riding. He won a share of the bareback riding title at the Will Rogers Stampede in Claremore, Okla., after an 84-point ride aboard Rafter H Rodeo’s High Country, worth $964, and also earned a fourth-place check in bareback riding at the Central Arkansas PRCA Rodeo in Conway.

For the weekend, Dent earned $2,090.
