1. Atchison goes for the gold at Bremerton Silver Tier event
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Ty Atchison worked behind the scenes at 30-40 PRCA rodeos last year while employed by the Harry Vold Rodeo Company and quickly felt the frustration of “feeding the horses you want to get on.”
It was the nudge he needed to make him realize he wanted to compete full time and see what he could accomplish, the nudge he needed to go from backstage into the spotlight he found Aug. 29 at the Kitsap County Fair & Stampede in Bremerton, Wash.
Atchison, 23 and in his fourth season as a PRCA card holder, had the biggest win of his career at Thunderbird Stadium, his first win in a Wrangler Million Dollar Tour event presented by Justin Boots.
The Jackson, Mo., cowboy drew one of the elite saddle bronc horses in the sport and stayed on Wyoming’s Miss Congeniality of the Powder River string for 89 points and a five-point win over five-time World Champion Billy Etbauer and Cody DeMoss.
“Miss Congeniality is one of those horses I’ve always wanted the chance to ride,” Atchison said. “She met my expectations and then some. That horse is just the epitome of saddle bronc riding.
“It’s funny, when I got the first text message about my draw a week before the rodeo, I just saw ‘Powder River’ and ‘Wyoming’s Miss,’” Atchison said. “It didn’t register with me that it was Miss Congeniality, which may have been a good thing. I had five days where I wasn’t so excited and nervous.”
Atchison’s check for $4,446 at Bremerton lifted his season total to $32,766, moving him from 28th to 23rd in the PRCA World Standings. His money total for the year is just shy of his total earnings from his first three seasons.
While working for Vold, Atchison competed in fewer than 20 PRCA rodeos last year, winning or sharing titles in Tupelo, Miss., Hattiesburg, Miss., Millington, Tenn., Forrest City, Ark., and Pueblo, Colo., finishing 68th in the world standings with $12,671.
This year, traveling with Cody and Heith DeMoss, Atchison has already competed in more than 80 rodeos.
“It’s been a great year,” Atchison said. “Those guys (the DeMoss brothers) have been great to me. Before this year, I thought rodeo was pretty much cut and dried, but they’ve taught me so much about how to enter and how to compete. They know all the horses and all the stock contractors.
“And it’s great to travel with guys who show you this life can be fun. We pretty much have a blast every day.”
Matt Shiozawa moved a step closer to qualifying for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo for the fourth time in five years with his tie-down roping win at Bremerton.
Shiozawa, of Chubbuck, Idaho, had a time of 15.5 seconds on two head to edge Sterling Smith by a tenth of a second. With additional checks at rodeos in Kennewick, Wash., and Tremonton, Utah, Shiozawa finished the Aug. 28-30 weekend with $6,665 to push his season earnings to $68,231 and solidify his hold on sixth place in the PRCA World Standings.
Veterans David Key and Rich Skelton won the two-head average in team roping with a time of 8.5 seconds, a half-second ahead of world standings leaders Chad Masters and Jade Corkill.
The outcome delayed Corkill taking over the regular-season earnings record for heelers; he is $877 behind Skelton’s record of $110,626, set in 2000.
Other champions at Bremerton were bareback riders Clint Cannon and Ryan Gray (87 points), steer wrestlers Tommy Cook and Shawn Greenfield (7.5 seconds on two head), bull rider Beau Schroeder (89 points) and barrel racer Sue Smith (35.06 seconds on two runs).
2. Hooton wired for victory at Bremerton Seminole Hard Rock X-Bulls
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Jordan Hooton is competing with his jaw wired shut these days, complements of a Sammy Andrews bull over in Abilene, Kan.
It didn’t seem to matter much Aug. 30, when he rode Growney Brothers’ Wise One Willy for 89 points to win the Seminole Hard Rock Xtreme Bulls Tour stop presented by B&W Trailer Hitches in Bremerton, Wash.
The hard part came afterwards, when he wanted to mail home his check for $11,370 and couldn’t lick the back flap of the envelope.
“I’ve never won something like this…I like it,” Hooton said after arena secretary Haley Schneeberger had sealed the envelope for him. “Mmm hmm.”
The win moved Hooton from 25th in the Xtreme Bulls Tour standings to 9th – assuring the 21-year-old cowboy from Daingerfield, Texas, a spot at the Sept. 5 season finale in Ellensburg, Wash.
“I was fifth alternate (for Bremerton), and I didn’t know I’d gotten in until my travel partners, Howdy (Cloud) and Beau (Schroeder), called me two days ago. So, I showed up.”
When fellow Texan Clayton Foltyn withdrew, Hooton was in. The problem was, Hooton had that broken jaw.
“Some bull clicked my heels,” Hooton said with some difficulty through clenched teeth. “I was out for a couple weeks and came back just last week.”
In the semifinal round, Hooton drew Wise One Willy, a young bull with an average mark of 21.5 and a 100-percent buck-off rate. That didn’t give Hooton much of a scouting report, but some of his fellow riders had seen him.
“Some guys had gotten on him, and they told me about him and said he was real fast right at the latch,” Hooton said. “I was ready and just wanted to ride.”
It would take something better than average to qualify for the final round. As one of the last to ride in the round, he had seen an 88.5 from Tate Stratton, an 87.5 from Shawn Hogg and 85.5s from Cody Hancock and Corey Navarre. In fact, 15 riders had made the eight-second whistle.
Hooton rose to the occasion. The bull, as advertised, spun right in the gate, and the judges awarded Hooton an 89.
In the final round, Growney loaded the pen with tough, but largely rideable bulls. However, the bull riders fell short. B.J. Schumacher was bucked off Korkow’s Mortachi, a bull he rode last year to win a round during the Wrangler ProRodeo Tour Playoffs in Puyallup, Wash.
In fact, with only Hooton remaining, all the bull riders had bucked off. He had drawn Calgary Stampede’s Before Dark. The bull had only been ridden once before for 90.5 points.
“That second bull was rough,” he said. “Right before I nodded my head, Beau shouted right into my ear, ‘You won!’ and so it kind of screwed with my head.”
It screwed with him enough that he didn’t make the whistle, but Schroeder was right: he won anyway.
The Bremerton Xtreme Bulls stop will be televised at 3 p.m. EDT Sept. 27 on ESPN2. The show will be re-aired at noon EDT on Oct. 11 and Nov. 7 on ESPN Classic.
Next up, the Xtreme Bulls Tour finale is set for 8 p.m. PDT on Sept. 5 in Ellensburg, Wash. ProRodeo.com will post the Ellensburg contestant list and stock draw this week.

5. Rodeo News and Notes
The Trevor Brazile Watch
Even Trevor Brazile’s less productive weeks are pretty darn good.
Sure, Brazile failed to cash at Kennewick, Wash., and Lynden, Wash., but he won the steer roping at the Will Rogers Memorial Rodeo in Vinita, Okla., and was the all-around champion at the Kitsap County Fair & Rodeo in Bremerton, Wash., earning paychecks in team roping and tie-down roping.
It added $5,738 to his bottom line, bringing Brazile’s season all-around earnings to $206,202 and keeping him $8,489 ahead of his pace in 2007, when he set a single-season record of $425,115.
Brazile’s win in Vinita, with a two-head time of 22.1 seconds, moved him up a spot to fifth in the steer roping world standings. He leads the tie-down roping standings and is third among team roping headers.
Bremerton was Brazile’s 11th all-around title in the past five weeks.
He is currently competing in the Colorado State Fair & Rodeo in Pueblo, which ends Sept. 1.
Justin Boots Playoffs to be televised on ESPN2
The Justin Boots Playoffs, in Puyallup, Wash., and the Justin Boots Championships, in Omaha, Neb. – the concluding events of the Wrangler Million Dollar Tour presented by Justin Boots – will be televised on ESPN2 this fall and rebroadcast on ESPN Classic.
The Sept. 11-13 Justin Boots playoffs premiere at noon on Oct. 18 and will be re-shown at noon on Oct. 24 (ESPN Classic) and again at 11 a.m. on Oct. 25 (ESPN2). The Sept. 24-26 Justin Boots Championships will air at noon on Oct. 25 (ESPN2), just after the final broadcast of the Puyallup coverage, and then re-shown at noon on Nov. 1 and noon on Nov. 29 (ESPN Classic).
The Justin Boots Playoffs feature the top 24 contestants in each event from the year-long Wrangler MDT, and the top 12 after Puyallup advance to Omaha for the $800,000 Justin Boots Championships, hosted by Ak-Sar-Ben’s River City Roundup.
RodeoHouston takes part in Entrepreneurship Bootcamp
The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo was a proud sponsor of Texas A&M University’s Entrepreneurship Bootcamp for Veterans with Disabilities, which ran Aug. 15-23.
“This is what the Show is about — providing educational opportunities for people of all ages,” said Skip Wagner, Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo president. “And, we're giving back to men and women who have truly given more than most of us can imagine.”
A dozen men and women, injured as a result of military service in Iraq and Afghanistan since Sept. 11, 2001, participated in the free program. It is designed to assist veterans with disabilities in becoming small-business owners.
In 2008, the Mays Business School at Texas A&M University joined a consortium, led by Syracuse University, to bring world-class faculty, entrepreneurs, disability experts and business professionals together in a program focused on training veterans in small business ownership.
The program is completely free for the veterans, including travel and accommodations. The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo has been a sponsor since the program began at the Mays Business School.
“As a veteran, I am personally excited about this program, and that the Show can be part of a solution that helps these men and women move forward with positive, practical information,” said Leroy Shafer, Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo chief operating officer. “It’s a commitment to our community that will pay dividends well beyond the individuals directly involved.”
