LAS VEGAS -- The rodeo world was waiting for nine-time World Champion Trevor Brazile to make an impact at the 51st Wrangler National Finals Rodeo, and the wait ended in Round 5 in front of 17,027 at the Thomas & Mack Center. Brazile, who had won just $7,188 combined in team roping and tie-down roping through four rounds, tied six-time World Champion Cody Ohl for the top spot in the tie-down roping with a 7.1-second run to earn a $15,343 check.
"This was, by far, the best calf I've drawn this week, and that means a lot," said Brazile, who leads Clint Robinson by $22,984 in the tie-down roping world standings. "You've got 15 guys out here who didn't get here by accident, and when you're on the wrong end of (the draw), it's not as much fun. Tonight, I knew I could even miss the barrier a little bit and just go do it wherever it took me, and that calf was going to be good enough to let me do my job."
Brazile is ninth in the average and knows he needs to go for broke each night if he hopes to claim a second tie-down roping gold buckle.
"I'm going to try to make as good of a run as I can make," Brazile said. "Hopefully, we'll get on the right end of the cattle – and I feel I've gotten that all out of my system – and it's all downhill from here."
Ohl, of Hico, Texas, remained red-hot, tying Brazile for the top spot a night after a scorching 6.6-second run to win Round 4. He took over the lead in the Wrangler NFR average race with a five-head time of 43.1 seconds.
"I didn't know a whole lot about this calf," said Ohl, who has moved to third in the PRCA World Standings, $41,617 behind Brazile, at a rodeo where first place in the average pays $43,954. "I've got a buddy at home who DVR's the rounds before I go, and then I call him and tell him which calf I have and who had him he watches them over and over and over. Then I'm able to make a game plan. I just knew he ran a good pattern and didn't kick, and that's all I ask for. If the calf doesn't kick, he can run as fast as he wants to or as slow as he wants to, as long as he gives me a chance to step my game up and win something."
The battle among the big men waged on during Round 5, with the top three steer wrestlers in the PRCA World Standings finishing in order at the Thomas & Mack Center. Standings leader and 2005 World Champion Lee Graves won his second consecutive round after stopping the clock in 3.5 seconds, one-tenth of a second ahead of second-place and two-time World Champion Luke Branquinho and third-place Jake Rinehart. Branquinho, of Los Alamos, Calif., and Rinehart, of Highmore, S.D., each posted 3.6-second runs to earn five-figure checks and do their best to keep pace with Graves.
Graves has excelled while receiving treatment for an ailing back, and he now feels confident in his approach to each round.
"It's just a turnaround type of deal," Graves, who has now won $45,221 in Las Vegas, said of his back-to-back wins. "I wanted to get through the first three perfs and get a look at the steers. Now I've had two good steers and made two good runs. My horse is working well. I had a setback in Round 2; I had a back injury that scared me pretty bad. I really didn't think I'd be able to compete at my 100-percent best, but I've turned it around the last couple days, spent a lot of time icing and stretching, and we're back on track."
Graves, of Calgary, Alberta, widened his world standings lead over Branquinho to $17,580 -- just more than a first-place round check -- and continues to lead the Wrangler NFR average race with a 19.2-second total time.
For the third time in five days at the Wrangler NFR, the bareback riding ended in a tie. Jared Smith, the 2008 PRCA Bareback Riding Rookie of the Year, rode Rafter G Rodeo's Citation for 88.5 points, then watched as two-time World Champion Bobby Mote earned the same score on Frontier Rodeo's Delta Ship.
Mote, who twice tied the Wrangler NFR record with 91.5-point rides last year, knew he had drawn a good horse because reigning World Champion Justin McDaniel had originally set the record aboard Delta Ship in 2007.
"Justin McDaniel has the arena record on that horse, and I’ve only seen him a handful of times, and he’s always great," said Mote, who gained another $15,343 on PRCA World Standings leader Clint Cannon thanks to the share of first place. "This was really the first time all week that I drew at the top of the pen. I’ve had good horses, but there was always half-a-dozen better ones than what I had. That can get at you if you let it, but I just decided to keep doing my job and sooner or later they’d run a great horse under me, and they did tonight."
Mote, of Culver, Ore., ranks second in the Wrangler NFR average, while Cannon is 14th heading into the second half of the 10-day event. Cannon leads the standings with $235,900, and Mote is in second place with $198,122. Round 2 winner Kaycee Feild continues to lead the average with 427 points, with Mote in second with 418.
Mote said he's not going to get ahead of himself or think too much about the world standings just yet.
"It’s important in the end, but I’m not really going to worry about it," Mote said. "I’m just going to go and try to make a good ride every time and not get carried away with what’s going on and just do my job. I have to just keep it as simple as I can. Getting caught up in the drama of it, I’ve done that in the past and that’s when I’ve made mistakes. So, I’m just going to take it one day at a time. I know that’s not much for drama, but it’s effective for me."
Smith was thrilled to break through with a share of a round victory on a horse he was familiar with.
"To win a round at the Finals is another step and a dream come true. Words can’t explain it. It’s awesome," said Smith, who earned his first check of the week in Round 5. "I had just gotten on Citation in Waco (Texas) at the Heartland Finals, and that’s one of the horses that got me to the (Wrangler National) Finals this year. I was 81 on him there, but I broke my hand this summer and then created some really bad habits. I was kind of excited, but in a way, I thought he might not be enough horse, but he had an amazing trip tonight. He was outstanding, and you can’t knock him at all for it."
The brother duo of Riley and Brady Minor recovered from a no-time in the fourth round with a vengeance, winning the fifth performance in 3.8 seconds. That time was eight-tenths of a second faster than Nick Sartain and Kollin VonAhn, who won a share of first place in Round 4.
"Actually, the go-round was fairly easy compared to other nights," said Brady Minor, the team's heeler. "I don't have a choice but to just heel as fast as I can. As soon as the head rope goes on, I just have to heel them as fast as I can. The header throws so fast here, it's kind of hard for the heeler to get there, to be honest with you. I just have to go as soon as he nods, and hopefully get a couple of swings off before he turns them."
The top two teams in the PRCA World Standings failed to earn checks in Round 5, so heeler Jade Corkill kept his lead over Martin Lucero, while his partner, 2007 World Champion Chad Masters, remained second to Luke Brown in the heading standings.
The siblings were all smiles after earning their second big check of the event in what has been an up-and-down experience for them.
"You've just got to know that each night it pays $17,000," said Riley Minor, who is riding a horse he bought from eight-time World Champion Header Speed Williams. "Everybody here is good, and everybody struggles at some time. If you made it here, you know you're good enough to win. It is hard to stay pumped up when you have a couple of off nights."
J.J. Elshere, the 2006 Wrangler NFR average champion, became the first saddle bronc rider to win two rounds at this year's event after riding Big Bend Rodeo's Kool Toddy for 88 points. That was 1.5 points better than reigning World Champion Cody Wright, who was aboard 2009 USST/PRCA Saddle Bronc of the Year Spring Planting of Flying 5 Rodeo, and Wade Sundell, who earned his score on Kesler Rodeo's Starburst.
"I felt like she was trying to buck me off on every jump, and I was just going with her and trying to keep things going," Elshere, who moved into second place in the PRCA World Standings, said of Kool Toddy. "It's going way better than it did last year. I haven't won more than one round at a Finals before at all. I am drawing at the top of the pen a couple of the rounds, and that has helped out a bunch."
Elshere trails Jesse Kruse by $27,390 and stands fifth in the average race. Shaun Stroh held onto his Wrangler NFR average lead with a fourth-place finish and has 410.5 points on five head.
For the first time in more than a decade, no bull rider was able to record a qualified ride at the Wrangler NFR in Round 5. The sixth performance of the 1997 NFR was the last scoreless night for bull riders at the national finals, and as a result, each of the 15 cowboys received $3,686 in ground money. That money is unofficial and does not count toward the PRCA World Standings.
Two-time World Champion Barrel Racer Sherry Cervi won her second round of the Wrangler NFR with a 13.60-second run. The $17,139 first-place check kept her fourth in the world standings. Reigning World Champion Lindsay Sears was second in 13.62 seconds, while 2007 World Champion Brittany Pozzi finished third in 13.83 seconds.
"She felt great," Cervi said of her mare, Stingray. "She finally turned the first barrel like she needed to. It is really fun. She is handling the pressure, and I am really proud of her."
Pozzi, who is third in the average, continues to lead the world standings with $210,324, while Sears leads the average and is second in the world with $200,100.
