Countdown: Houston enters final week

One week from now, the Crusher Rentals PRCA World Standings will take on a distinctly different look, fresh off the conclusion of RodeoHouston, which will pay $50,000 to each event champion on March 22 (team ropers will share a $55,000 prize).

RodeoHouston, ProRodeo's richest regular-season event with a purse of $1.3 million, enters its final week of competition tonight with the final round of the fifth and last Super Series rodeo. In RodeoHouston, 10 contestants (10 teams in team roping) compete in five separate, three-performance Super Series rodeos. The top four money winners (20 total) in each event in the five Super Series rodeos will advance to a two-performance semifinal round (March 19-20), where previous scores and times will be zeroed out.

The top four contestants in each 10-person group from the semifinals (eight total) will advance to the final round. However, the cowboys and cowgirls who placed fifth through 10th in the semifinals will have one last shot to advance, competing in one more wild card round on March 21. The top two contestants from that wild card round will advance to the finals, bringing the total number of contestants in each event in the finals to 10.

After a single round of competition in the finals on March 22, the top four contestants will advance to a “shoot-out round,” and that winner will receive the $50,000 check.

On Tuesday, Reliant Stadium becomes the home of the Dodge Xtreme Bulls Tour, presented by B&W Trailer Hitches, for the fourth stop on the 2008 Tour. Competition is scheduled for 7 p.m.

In Houston, each of the 40 riders compete for part of the $75,000 purse and placement in the Xtreme Bulls rankings. Riders scheduled to compete are Reigning World Champion Wesley Silcox of Payson, Utah; B.J. Schumacher of Hillsboro, Wis., the 2005 world champion; Cody Hancock of Taylor, Ariz., who won the world title in 2000; and Kanin Asay of Powell, Wyo., the defending Dodge Xtreme Bulls Tour National Champion.

In Xtreme Bulls, every contestant competes in the semifinal round, with the top 15 performers advancing to the final round. The winner of the two-head average wins that stop’s title. Dodge Xtreme Bulls Tour earnings count toward the world standings, which determines qualifiers for the 50th Wrangler National Finals Rodeo, Dec. 4-13 in Las Vegas.

On March 14, Super Series IV ended, with another set of competitors punching their tickets for one of two semifinal rounds. The group was highlighted by Reigning World Barrel Racing Champion Brittany Pozzi-Pharr of Victoria, Texas; 2006 World Champion Bull Rider B.J. Schumacher of Hillsboro, Wis., and ProRodeo rookie team roper Allen Joel Bach of Millsap, Texas, the son of four-time World Champion Team Roper Allen Bach. Steer wrestler Hunter Cure of Holliday, Texas, won two rounds and earned $8,500, the most of any competitor in the fourth Super Series rodeo.
