MARCH 10, 2007 — HOUSTON — The seven champions of Super Series IV were awarded a combined total of $57,800 during the March 10 performance of RodeoHouston.
Each event during Super Series IV featured 10 contestants competing three nights in a row for money and the top four places in their respective events.
Giovanni Davis from College Station, Texas, won the Super Series IV Tie-Down Roping Championship with a total of $6,000 on three head.
Stetson Herrera, a senior agricultural major at New Mexico State University and second-time competitor at RodeoHouston, won the Super Series IV Bareback Riding Championship and $11,000.
“The advice that I’d give to newcomers would be,” Herrera said, “come with try and heart, and you’ll do great.”
Spencer Mitchell and Monty Joe Petska won the Super Series IV Team Roping Championship with $3,800.
“Houston’s one of the only places that give you goose bumps every time you ride in,” said Petska.
Mitchell and Petska have been roping together only 2–3 months and had to prepare for RodeoHouston differently than any other rodeo.
“Roping here is so different because there is so much more arena than other rodeos,” Petska said. “You have to rope a different style and help your partner out a little more.”
Jake Hayworth won the Super Series IV Saddle Bronc Championship and a total of $9,500.
“Before coming to Houston in 2000,” said Hayworth, “I’d heard stories about coming down the concourse and them opening the gates and it be like seeing Heaven. Since then, I’ve called Houston one of the four churches of rodeo.”
Jon Regatz won the Super Series IV Steer Wrestling Championship and $7,500.
“The setup of the rodeo makes you keep from backing off the barrier,” said Regatz. “You have to stay aggressive here because you’re competing against the best in the world.”
Lindz Sears won the Super Series IV Barrel Racing Championship and a total of $10,000.
“I have to prepare differently here because the ground changes here everyday,” said Sears. “So to compete with the same 10 girls, you have to change with the stadium.”
Mike Moore won the Super Series IV Bull Riding Championship and a total of $10,000.
“To ride bulls, you really need to find a good quality school where you’ll get the best instruction possible and take the right stock starting off,” said Moore. “Really you have to have a positive attitude and never doubt yourself. If you doubt yourself, then everyone else will, and you’ve got to believe that you’ll succeed.”
Super Series Champions received $6,000 in additional prize money, a 75th anniversary Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo™ watch and RodeoHouston garment bag.
Super Series V Champions will be announced Tuesday, March 13, at a 6:45 p.m. performance featuring entertainer Toby Keith.
