rodeohouston™ bp super series iii championship — march 11
The Rodeohouston BP Super Series III Championship saw new and familiar faces battle it out for a chance at being one step closer to the $50,000 prize money in the Championship Round, March 21.
First-timer Tuf Cooper started the night off with an 11.5-second run, totaling 32.9 seconds to win Tie-Down Roping and $5,500. Cooper, 19, has been riding since he was in diapers. “It feels awesome to win my first-ever Super Series at RodeoHouston,” he said. “I’ve wanted to compete here for a long time; winning it would be crazy.”
Seasoned veteran Will Lowe rode to first place in Rounds 1 and 2 of the RodeoHouston BP Super Series III. His final 78 point ride brought his total for three rides to 241.5 to win Bareback Riding and $8,000. “I love competing in Houston because it’s so large. It holds true to the saying that ‘everything’s bigger in Texas.’” Lowe won the 2003 Bareback Riding Championship at Rodeohouston.
Header David Key and heeler Marty Becker came next for a total of 22.7 seconds to win Team Roping and $4,512.50 each. Key, holding his 13-month-old son, said, “I stay focused on my job at hand and the barrier in front of me before I ride.” Becker agreed and added, “It’s all about keeping a clear mind.”
With a total score of 240.5 on three, Justin Arnold took home the Saddle Bronc Riding Super Series III slot and $7,500. “I love competing here because they always have good horses to get on and it’s an awesome rodeo,” he said. “I urge kids watching me to follow their dreams and always try as hard as you can.”
Steer wrestler Luke Branquinho had a total of 14.5 seconds on three that sent him to the Semifinals round and home with $7,500 from Super Series III. “I grew up riding, but never was too good at swinging a rope; steer wrestling is my sport.”
Stephanie Fryar stayed smooth in her first RodeoHouston BP Super Series, winning the Barrel Racing and $6,500 with a total of 46.78 seconds. “I really like Houston because of how well they treat the rodeo contestants and because it’s such a large rodeo.”
Bull rider Howdy Cloud has been competing at RodeoHouston since 2003, winning his Super Series in 2007, and now 2009. Cloud had a total of 246.5 points that won him $8,500 and sent him on to the Semifinals. “It always feels good to win in front of the crowd at RodeoHouston. I hope that little boys watching me know that it takes dedication to compete in Houston.”
