FORT WORTH, Texas --- There were six gold buckles represented in the team roping at the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo on Friday night and fans got to see the talent that earned those titles.
Allen Bach from Weatherford, Texas, has four of those buckles in his collection. He did the heeling for Matt Sherwood, from Pima, Ariz., who has two. The newly crowned team or Nick Sartain and Kollin VonAhn were also here and all four had success in their first appearances at the Will Rogers Memorial Coliseum.
Sherwood and Bach had the fast run of the night at 5.5 seconds. This is currently third in the first round. Sartain and VonAhn are right behind them at 5.8, tied for fourth place. The team roping here is back-to-back, so they rope in the first and second rounds in consecutive performances. These four men have their second opportunity here Saturday morning and are in prime position to advance to the final round on Feb. 7. Also in contention is Bach’s son Joel who is roping with Paul Eaves. They both live in Milsap, Texas and stopped the clock in 6.1 seconds.
Trevor Brazile, the seven-time all-around champion, from Decatur, Texas, and Patrick Smith, from Lipan, Texas, lead the over-all standings. With Brazile doing the heading and Smith heeling, they have a total time of 10.3 seconds on two runs. Second round times are going to have to be extremely speedy to move ahead of Brazile and Smith. However, the top 12 teams will advance and there is plenty of room behind Brazile and Smith. The sixth place position is currently held by Montana’s Chase Tryan and Matt Robertson at 20.1 seconds.
There over-all leaderboard in tie-down roping saw some changes thanks to success on Friday night. Scott Kormos from Teague, Texas, roped and tied his calf in 9.0 seconds This isn’t likely to get a check in the second round, but combined with his first round time gives him a total of 18.2 seconds on two runs. He is ahead of Blair Burk from Durant, Okla., and Justin Maass, from Giddings, Texas, who both have 18.7.
Local favorite and all-around contender Chad Eubank, won’t have an opportunity to win a buckle here. Eubank, from Cleburne was entered in bareback riding and bull riding. He had a solid ride in bareback riding on Friday afternoon, competed again Friday night and that’s the last that rodeo fans will see of him here. He came off of his bareback horse, landed wrong on his right ankle and broke it. He was scheduled to compete in bull riding Friday night and Saturday morning and had another bareback horse to get on Saturday morning as well. Instead, he is going home with a cast on and will be following the directions of the Justin Sports Medicine team.
There are three performances of the Worlds Original Indoor Rodeo on Saturday, at 10 a.m., 2 and 7:30 p.m.
