CHEYENNE, Wyo. – Lonnie Carpenter might be the happiest cowboy at the 113th annual Cheyenne Frontier Days Rodeo.

Carpenter from Haysville, Kan., was one of six bull riders to make it to the eight-second whistle. He rode a bull from Lowry Rodeo Company named Velvet Elvis for 90 points to take the lead in the first round. Carpenter will have his second ride here Tuesday and will be hoping for a repeat performance and a chance to qualify for the final performance on July 26.

In bareback riding, it was Zach Curran, from Arvada, Colo., who had the high marked ride of the day to take the lead in the first round. Curran rode a horse from Florida’s Five Star Rodeo named Marbles for 84 points. Right behind him was three-time Wrangler National Finals Rodeo qualifier Jessy Davis from Payson, Utah. Davis has recently returned to competition after having his shoulder reconstructed. He shared the win at the Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo in Colorado Springs a week ago and looks to be back to winning form. Davis was 82 points here on Saturday.

Mike Outhier has a reputation on the rodeo circuit for being superstitious. Apparently everything was in order for the Utopia, Texas, cowboy here as he took the early lead in saddle bronc riding. He was 79 points on Five Star’s Dippin Wacky.

In the women’s barrel race, Laura Lambert from Wiggins, Colo., took the lead in both the second round and the over-all standings. She had a time of 17.55 seconds on her second run giving her a total of 35.78 seconds.

The barrel racing is the only event that is not back to back. All of the other events were in the first round on Saturday with contestants returning on Sunday for their second competition. Sunday’s rodeo gets underway at 12:45 p.m.
