Justin McBride is hot! After winning New Orleans last week, McBride walked away with his second consecutive win last night in Kansas City a the Cabela‘s Classic. This marks his fourth win of the 2007 season and the 27th of his career.
A spectacular ride aboard Chumley/Katich/R&L’s great bull Dr. Proctor during the second round is what clinched the top spot for McBride. He rode this bull, who had bested him twice before, to a score of 91 points, the highest scoring ride of the event.
Although he bucked off in the Championship Round, this ride and being the only man to cover three bulls gave him the event title and nearly $70,000 in earnings for the weekend.
Paulo Crimber came in second, thrilling fans with his ride on Page and Teague’s Black Smoke, for 90.24 points. Renato Nunes De Rosa also had an outstanding ride aboard Diamond S Bucking Bulls’ Cat Daddy to win the Championship Round with a score of 90.75.
It’s J.B. Mauney though who is still McBride’s nemesis. Mauney topped Diamond R Bucking Bulls’ Sharp Dressed Kid with a score of 89.75 points and remains just 349.5 points behind McBride in the race for the World Title. Jason Bennett has catapulted himself into the third spot, 2105 point behind McBride, with Brian Canter in the fourth position 2308.75 points behind. Despite his injury and having to sit out the last few events, Mike Lee continues to be in the top five, 2456.2 points behind the leader. Lee expects to sit out another month and then come back to competition in full strength.
Mike White, who suffered a concussion in St Louis, surprised everyone by showing up in New Orleans to ride and then again in Kansas City. He bucked off all three of his bulls in Kansas City, and his reactions appear to be slow. He is definitely not riding to the best of his ability and one only hopes that he will take a page from Mike Lee’s book and sit out the next few events to give his body a chance to heal.
In tragic news, Lee Akin was terribly injured at a PRCA event in Montgomery, Al. when a bull stepped on his head following his ride. Akin has already undergone several emergency brain surgeries and remains in a medically induced coma. Lee needs all of our prayers to help him to recover from this devastating blow. I hope that you will take a moment as you read this to say a prayer for he and his family. The PBR will be posting updates on his condition at their website.
St Patrick’s day begins the Tacoma Classic in Tacoma, WA. We’ll see whether Justin McBride can hold his top position in the World Standings or if J.B. Mauney will step up and take it from him.
Until next time…
